Job Description

Bus/Van Driver Substitute for the Transportation Department.

Responsibilities
  • Follow safety rules as students board and exit buses or cross streets near bus stops.
  • Comply with traffic regulations to operate vehicles safely and courteously.
  • Perform pre‑ and post‑inspection of vehicle components (tires, brakes, lights, safety equipment).
  • Maintain order among students during trips to ensure safety.
  • Pick up and drop off students at scheduled neighborhood locations following strict time schedules.
  • Report any bus malfunctions or needed repairs.
  • Drive gasoline, diesel, or electric multi‑passenger vehicles to transport students between neighborhoods, schools, and activities.
  • Prepare and submit travel reports (number of passengers, mileage, fuel consumption, student behavior).
  • Keep bus interiors clean for passengers.
  • Read maps and follow written and verbal directions.
  • Report delays, accidents, or other traffic situations via telephone or mobile two‑way radios.
  • Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for passenger comfort.
  • Escort small children across roads and highways when a responsible adult is in the vehicle.
  • Perform minor vehicle repairs.
  • Provide first aid as needed.
  • Adhere to Nebraska Department of Education transportation regulations and all Department of Transportation standards.
  • Serve as a role model and positive member of the community without negatively impacting the District’s reputation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of staff, student, and parent information per law and District rules.
Qualifications
  • High school degree or GED.
  • Unrestricted motor vehicle operator’s license and current school bus permit.
  • Satisfactory driving record.
  • CDL preferred but not required.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa status.
  • Position is part‑time.
Physical Requirements

Essential physical functions include sitting, walking, standing, sprinting/run, bending or twisting, kneeling, reaching, and lifting up to 75 lbs with appropriate assistive tools. Ability to drive for extended periods and operate vehicle controls consistently.

FLSA Exempt Status:
Non‑exempt. At‑will position.
