Transit Bus Driver

The Sioux City Transit Department is hiring an experienced Transit Bus Driver to operate city buses as needed. The driver will transport city residents safely and professionally, record activity, and maintain compliance with all traffic and safety regulations.

• Operate transit vehicles on assigned routes maintaining schedules and complying with traffic regulations.
• Provide information to the public regarding transportation services and transit policy.
• Perform pre‑operation safety inspections and report needed service, repairs.
• Maintain passenger and vehicle records.
• Respond to public inquiries and complaints and provide accurate information.
• Assist elderly customers and persons with disabilities, secure mobility aids, evacuate passengers in emergencies.
• Report route problems or traffic changes to supervisor.
• Provide detailed accident or incident reports.
• Collect passenger fares.
• Practice safety at all times while performing duties.
• Respond to citizen questions and concerns courteously and timely.
• Regulate heating, lighting, ventilation for passenger comfort.
• Handle passenger emergencies or disruptions.
• Perform other duties related to the position as assigned.
• Temporarily perform duties outside normal classification during declared emergencies.

License
:
Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement (Class A/Learner’s Permit acceptable with valid CDL Permit at time of application). The license must be maintained within three months of employment.

Driving History
:
Provide a DMV’issued Driving History Record within 30 days of interview.

Experience
:
Minimum one year dealing directly with the public; public bus driving experience is desirable.

Education
:
High School Diploma or GED desirable.

Shifts
:
Willing to work flexible schedules including evenings, Saturdays, and approximately 30–35 hours per week.

Residency
:
Must reside within 30 miles of Sioux City limits (may include Nebraska or South Dakota).

Other
:
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds, comfortable standing, bending, and crouching; keep neat appearance; courteous; adhere to safety regulations; communicate effectively in English.

Driver must remain alert, calm under stress, and able to perform repeatable vehicle control tasks. Must meet basic vision and motor coordination requirements. Should be able to coordinate limb movements and handle emergencies. Acceptable for 10 to 30 pound lifting.
