SET DIRECTOR/ General High School and Middle School
Position:
Needham Public Schools is seeking a set Director for the SY26-27 school for the High School and Middle School productions. We will consider multiple candidates since each show has a separate stipend. While there is some overlap in production schedules, with strategic scheduling these positions can be assigned to one candidate.
The Set Director will work in close collaboration with the Artistic Director of the show to design the set. The Set Director is fully responsible to ensure that the set is built within the production timeline. The Set Director will also assist with props as needed. The Set Director should enjoy and be skilled in working with students. It is essential that they are skilled at facilitating safe set builds with a group of students.
Schedule:
It is expected that the Set Director be available for the full production calendar. We will only consider candidates that are able to commit to the full production calendar.
* Weekly Set Building Days:
Hold set building days two-three times per week per production beginning eight weeks prior to the performance date. The exact schedule will be determined collaboratively with the Theater Director. The Set Director is responsible for supervising students during the set-building time, facilitating the building and clean-up, and ensuring that the appropriate materials have been procured in advance for building days.
* Build Week:
Two weeks prior to opening night, the Set Director will be available every day after school for set building
* Set Complete and ready to be used during rehearsals by the Monday before the opening day of the school.
* Tech Week:
The week before the opening day of each production.
* Show Dates:
* NHS Students Acting to Make A Difference (SAMD):
Friday, November 6 through Sunday, November 8
* Middle School Musical:
Friday February 5 through Sunday, February 7th.
* NHS Musical:
Friday, March 5 through Sunday, March 7 (Snow Date Monday March
8)
* Middle School Play:
Friday, May 6 through Sunday , May 8
* Strike:
Immediately following the last show and on the Monday after the production. The Auditorium needs to be fully cleaned with all set pieces removed no later than the end of the day on Monday immediately following the production. The Set Director is expected to have an active role in the strike.
Responsibilities:
* Design set in collaboration with the Artistic Director of the Show
* Procure materials needed for set builds (following NPS procurement guidelines and production budget)
* Supervise tech students during build days, tech week, and strike
* Ensure that the set is fully functional and complete by two weeks before opening night, which is when rehearsals with the set begin.
* Communicate proactively with the Theatre Director and Director of Fine and Performing Arts regarding any production issues, delays, student concerns, etc.
* Train and ensure that tech students are following appropriate safety standards
Stipend:
* SAMD Set Director: $3,017
* Set Advisor NHS Musical: $3,017
* Pollard Set Director Musical and Play: $3,017
These positions are Level II stipends. The Stipend is paid on the NPS stipend salary schedule, with the first payment in February and the second in May.
