Job Description

The Needham Public Schools community seeks an energetic, skilled, and warm Visual Arts Teacher for the  school year. The position, a one‑year appointment beginning Aug 31, 2026, is responsible for teaching Photography 1, Crafts, Drawing and Painting 1, and Art 4.

Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain a safe and nurturing classroom learning environment.
  • Collaborate with visual art department colleagues to develop proficiency‑based curriculum, lessons, and materials.
  • Develop and implement a visual art curriculum consistent with the 2019 Massachusetts Curriculum Framework and the National Core Arts Framework.
  • Create rigorous lesson plans, activities, and learning experiences.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress.
  • Reflect regularly and adjust practice to meet individual student needs.
  • Instruct students in aesthetic concepts, appreciation, and qualitative judgments about art.
  • Demonstrate visual art techniques in drawing, painting, and modeling.
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions for the school and community.
  • Continue professional development through seminars, workshops, or research.
  • Maintain accurate records, grading, and reporting for all student activities.
  • Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensure student conduct aligns with school standards and district policies.
  • Coordinate with other professional staff and participate in planning time, meetings, and faculty meetings.
  • Select and requisition appropriate instructional supplies and maintain inventory records.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to prepare student artwork for exhibitions.
Additional Duties
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Director of Fine and Performing Arts, Principal, and central office administrators.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Inspire a love of art in students.
  • Foster a growth mindset and connect to the Portrait of a Needham Graduate.
  • Apply current proficiency‑based teaching methods and educational pedagogy.
  • Demonstrate advanced visual art techniques across multiple mediums.
  • Use data analysis to formulate action plans.
  • Understand applicable federal and state education laws.
  • Use computer networking systems and software (e.g., Google Docs, Google Classroom).
  • Organize and coordinate work effectively.
  • Communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Engage in self‑evaluation for professional growth.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues.
Qualifications Profile
  • MA State Certification as a Visual Art Teacher.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education or related discipline.
  • Master’s Degree in related area preferred.
Experience
  • Successful prior visual art teaching experience is a plus.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary is determined by education and experience, ranging from Bachelor’s (Step
1) $63,217 to Doctorate (Step 14) $133,922 (1.0 FTE).
