Job Description

Needham Public Schools is an inclusive, dynamic, and multicultural community seeking an energetic, skilled, and warm First Grade Teacher to join our team.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Develops and administers the elementary curriculum consistent with the school district's goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates them into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, modifying instructional methods to fit individual students' needs, including those with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Instructs students in responsible citizenship and subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of Needham Public Schools.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and stays current with developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains an accurate and complete system for record‑keeping, grading, and reporting of all student activities, achievements, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures student conduct conforms with school standards and district policies, establishing and maintaining standards of behavior needed for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinates with other elementary staff members and coaches to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with District testing programs.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or central office administrators designated by the Superintendent.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, and the ability to differentiate instruction based on student learning styles. Training/experience in reading, writing, and mathematics instruction, an interest in science content, commitment to inclusive pedagogy, and the potential to contribute to student life beyond the classroom.
  • Comfortable with both in‑person and online pedagogy and teaching platforms.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive practices.
  • Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts; knowledge of data systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation concerning performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative and cooperative working relationships through strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Hold a Massachusetts Teaching License in Elementary 1‑6 and hold an SEI endorsement or a dual certification in ESL.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree.
Salary and Benefits

Salary is determined by education and experience, ranging from Bachelor's (Step
1) $63,217 to Doctorate (Step 14) $133,922 (1.0 FTE).
