Job Description

Needham Public Schools seeks an energetic, skilled, and warm History/Social Sciences Long-term Substitute Teacher to join our team. The successful candidate will help advance students’ critical reading, thinking, historical research, and writing skills while guiding their inquiry of the past. As a Needham High School educator, the teacher will collaborate to integrate the Portrait of a Needham Graduate and prepare students to become socially and culturally responsive contributors.

About Needham Public Schools (NPS): NPS is committed to equity, cultural proficiency, and community collaboration to ensure safe, bias-free learning environments and high expectations for all students. This METCO district serves approximately 5,500 students across 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 high school.

Department Context: Under the general supervision of the History and Social Sciences Department Chair, the substitute teacher will advance students’ reading, thinking, and historical inquiry, aligned with district standards and the Portrait of a Needham Graduate.

Job Responsibilities
  • Plan and teach multiple sections of History and Social Science, collaborating with the History & Social Sciences Department to support student learning and growth.
  • Teach content and skills in historical thinking and reasoning using standards-based curriculum guidelines aligned with district standards.
  • Adapt district curriculum materials to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students.
  • Set ambitious learning goals, create cognitively demanding tasks, and foster belief that all students can master challenging material through effort.
  • Assess students’ understanding regularly and adjust instruction to reach goals.
  • Demonstrate passion for students, content, and the teaching profession.
  • Differentiate instruction to support complex thinking and rigorous academic work for all students.
  • Use engaging instructional practices to motivate and involve all students and promote equitable participation.
  • Foster a productive learning environment where every student participates and is valued.
  • Engage with families and build collaborative, respectful relationships in service of student learning.
  • Performs other related duties as requested by the Department Chair and/or Principal.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • MA DESE certification in History or Social Studies at the appropriate grade level
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience teaching high school students and understanding the diverse needs of adolescents
  • Collaborative work ethic and experience with instructional technology
  • Commitment to inclusive pedagogy and contributing to student life
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree
Compensation

Compensation for substitutes is based on the duration of coverage: $24.42/hr - $27.25/hr
