Job Description

Needham Public Schools is an inclusive, dynamic, and multicultural community seeking an energetic, skilled, and warm Long Term Substitute Mathematics Teacher to join our team. This METCO district comprises 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 nationally‑ranked high school serving approximately 5,500 students.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and teach multiple sections of high school mathematics.
  • Collaborate with the high school department chair and members of the high school mathematics department to support student learning and growth.
  • Teach math using and modifying district curriculum and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Plan and execute appropriate instructional and learning strategies that reflect a deep understanding of the needs of students, including academic and social/emotional needs.
  • Use student level data to inform instruction and plan effective lessons and interventions.
  • Demonstrate an in‑depth knowledge of math content, methods, and principles of effective instruction.
  • Promote learning and growth of all students through instructional practices that establish high expectations, create a safe and effective classroom environment, and demonstrate cultural proficiency.
  • Foster learning and growth of all students through effective partnerships with families and caregivers.
  • Collaborate effectively with specialists, instructional coaches, administrators, and parents to foster positive social, emotional, and academic development for our students.
  • Ensure, through effective collaboration with colleagues (chiefly ESL and Special Education liaisons), that identified strategies that promote the success of all students in the classroom are in place.
  • Work under the general supervision of the building principal or another designated administrator, manage student behavior, assess and evaluate student achievement.
  • Provide structure in the classroom by building and maintaining a positive classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Mathematics license at the appropriate level
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with and/or teaching high school students; an understanding of the needs of students at this age
  • Collaborative work ethic
  • Training/experience in the use of instructional technology
  • Commitment to inclusive pedagogy
  • Potential to contribute to student life beyond the classroom
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree

Compensation

Compensation for substitutes is based on the duration of the coverage: $24.42/hr – $44.53/hr.
