Role

This role: Mechanical Engineering Co-op, Wearable and Biomedical Devices  will work with engineers developing wearable, biosensing, and medical device technologies. The role offers hands-on experience across the full product lifecycle, including prototyping, testing, data analysis, and refinement of devices that integrate sensors, embedded hardware, and user-centered design. You will help develop systems that measure physiological signals such as ECG, PPG, EMG, temperature, motion, and impedance, applying biomechanics, signal processing, and control concepts.

You will support design and evaluation of sensor-enabled systems, contribute to data-driven engineering decisions, and collaborate cross-functionally to balance performance, usability, and reliability.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to early concept development by supporting research, ideation, and exploration of new wearable and biomedical product opportunities
  • Apply knowledge of biomechanics, signal processing, or control systems to real-world engineering challenges
  • Support the collection, interpretation, and analysis of physiological and system-level data to inform design and performance decisions
  • Work with sensor-enabled systems and data acquisition platforms to help evaluate functionality and user experience
  • Use MATLAB and/or Python to analyze data, visualize trends, and support the development of analytical tools and models
  • Participate in design discussions and technical reviews, considering safety, usability, and reliability throughout development
  • Gain exposure to materials and components intended for skin-contact and body-worn applications, with emphasis on user comfort and performance
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, designers, and product partners to align technical insights with user needs
  • Develop an understanding of the user journey and the role of data-driven design in creating intuitive, trustworthy health-focused products
Attributes & Skills
  • Education:

    Current student in a related bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate program, or has graduated within the past year
  • Coursework or project experience in biomechanics, signal processing, or control systems
  • Must be able to work a full-time, 40-hour-per-week schedule with 5 days onsite in Needham, MA
  • Familiarity with physiological signals (e.g., ECG, PPG, EMG, temperature, motion, impedance) and basic signal processing concepts
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB and/or Python for data analysis and algorithm development
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering/physics fundamentals including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and mechanical design
  • Understanding of medical device design principles, including safety, usability, and reliability
  • Solid analytical skills, attention to detail, and proactive problem-solving
  • Intellectual curiosity and creativity, strong first principles thinking, positive attitude, and ability to deliver robust solutions
