This role is full time, 40 hours per week (Mon-Fri, 6:30am - 2:30pm). No regular weekend or holiday requirements at this time, but this may be subject to change if there is an extreme staffing need.
This is an inpatient, on-site role, working on the BID Needham Campus. The Inpatient Colorectal Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered care to colorectal surgery patients and some general surgery patients at the Needham campus. This APP will function as an integral member of our multidisciplinary surgical care team, working collaboratively with attending surgeons, chief residents, nursing staff, case management, and ancillary services to optimize patient outcomes and ensure efficient inpatient care delivery.
As a new role within the Colorectal Surgery team, this position is intended to provide support in a number of critical ways, including:
- Improving efficiency and continuity of care for colorectal surgery inpatients
- Supporting resident physicians through shared clinical responsibilities
- Improving discharge planning and care coordination
- Championing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols for colorectal surgery
- Strengthen nursing education and engagement around evidence-based perioperative care
- Improve patient outcomes, experiences, and operational performance across the Needham surgical service group
This new role is an ongoing part of our investment in advancing high-quality colorectal surgical care, improving care coordination, and supporting the continued growth of the colorectal surgery program at Needham.
Job Description:This position provides direct patient care relative to physical diagnosis and therapeutic management in an inpatient setting to patients with complex medical conditions or surgical patients. Works closely with faculty, fellows, residents and nursing staff to develop and coordinate a plan of care to meet the needs of the patient and their families. Some off-hour, weekend and on-call maybe required of this position.
Essential Responsibilities:Performs history and physical examinations, formulation of care plans, ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests and provides education to patients and their families. Acts as an educator and serves as a clinical resource for staff through consultation formal and informal education, review of literature and participation in seminars and conferences. Coordinates the care of patients in order to provide safe, effective, efficient and timely patient centered care.
Liaises between visiting nurses, clinical staff and consult services. Care plans and execution of those plans should encompass the entire service to tie the service together. Consults with physicians or surgeons regarding the care of patients for more complex diagnosis. Document clinical encounters clearly, precisely and in a timely manner. Works in a collaborative relationship with other health professional to determine health needs of patients and families.
Demonstrates and role models an interdisciplinary collaborate approach to patient care. Provide direct patient care and management for all opiod patients.
- Master's degree required in Nursing.

Basic Life Support0-1 years related work experience required. - MA Board authorization to practice as an APRN NRSG
- Valid prescriptive authority from both the MA DPH-DCP and Federal DEAAmerican Heart Association
- Basic Life Support Certificate - Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
