Job Description & How to Apply Below

At Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass, leadership believes strategy works best when it's built collaboratively, not handed down. The team culture prizes adaptability, feedback, and genuine partnership across departments, with an entrepreneurial spirit that makes room for new ideas and multi-year initiatives. Staff are trusted to bring their expertise to the table, and a culture of belonging runs through daily work. It's a museum that lives its values as much as it states them.

As Deputy Director of Communications, you'll build and lead an integrated communications program from the ground up, shaping the Museum's public identity, national reputation, and audience strategy across every channel. You'll have the creative latitude to establish new systems and processes rather than inherit rigid ones, along with direct influence over how a respected cultural institution tells its story. This role suits a communications leader who wants ownership, visibility, and the chance to leave a lasting mark on an organization's public voice.

Key Responsibilities Strategic Communications and Narrative Leadership
  • Develops an integrated marketing and communications strategy aligned with the Museum's mission, strategic plan, educational goals, audience priorities, and fundraising objectives.
  • Shapes a clear, hopeful, and broadly resonant narrative that positions the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass for national and global relevance.
Launch Marketing and Audience Development
  • Leads integrated campaigns that build awareness, generate demand, and convert priority audiences into museum visitors, members, and special ticket buyers.
  • Partners with the Museum's Deputy Directors to help shape and support the Museum's onsite and online retail, membership, and class registration strategy, bringing marketing, branding, and audience-development expertise to strengthen product visibility and sales.
Content Creation, Digital Engagement, and Internal Communications
  • Oversees and designs content across the website, email, social media, media materials, sponsor and donor communications, exhibitions, events, and multimedia storytelling, ensuring the Museum's brand is represented with care.
  • Strengthens the Museum's digital presence and communications, using audience insights and data to improve engagement and keep museum constituencies and partners informed.
Media Relations
  • Builds relationships across print, digital, broadcast, radio, podcast, local, and national media, and develops proactive opportunities that elevate the Museum, its leaders, and its educational model.
Project Management
  • Manages external agencies, consultants, and vendors, establishing clear roles, briefs, scopes, workflows, budgets, and timelines.
  • Tracks work across launch planning, media, digital, donor communications, education outreach, and events.
  • Builds strong relationships with reporters, pitches stories, and answers media questions quickly. Writes and edits press releases, speeches, statements, and web content.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or graphic design with an emphasis in digital content creation.
  • Experience: 4+ years of progressive experience in design, media, and marketing relations.
  • Skills: Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office 365, and Word Press website software.
  • Competencies: Proficient with digital equipment (digital camera, video equipment); able to prioritize and work independently with minimal supervision; graphic design experience in print and digital media; strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with staff and stakeholders.
