Kindergarten Classroom Aide – Job Description

Position: Kindergarten Classroom Aide

Reports To: Classroom Teacher and Building Principal

Location: Benton Elementary School

Position Purpose

The Kindergarten Classroom Aide supports the classroom teacher in creating a safe, positive, structured learning environment where young students can successfully transition into school. The aide provides academic, behavioral, and classroom support while helping students develop independence, confidence, and appropriate school routines.

Essential Responsibilities Student Support
  • Assist students during classroom instruction, small groups, centers, and independent work.
  • Reinforce skills and strategies taught by the classroom teacher.
  • Provide additional prompting, modeling, and practice for students who need support.
  • Help students learn classroom routines, procedures, and expectations.
  • Support students with transitions throughout the school day.
  • Encourage students to complete tasks and solve age-appropriate problems independently rather than doing tasks for them.
  • Provide calm, consistent support when students are frustrated, upset, or struggling to regulate their behavior.
  • Reinforce positive behavior and recognize students for meeting expectations.
Classroom Support
  • Work under the direction of the classroom teacher to support daily instruction and classroom routines.
  • Prepare instructional materials, organize supplies, and assist with classroom activities.
  • Supervise students during assigned portions of the day, which may include arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, restroom breaks, hallway transitions, or other duties.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, safe, and welcoming classroom environment.
  • Communicate student needs, concerns, successes, or patterns of behavior to the classroom teacher.
Professional Expectations
  • Maintain student confidentiality at all times.
  • Follow teacher direction and established classroom and building procedures.
  • Use positive, respectful, and developmentally appropriate language with students.
  • Maintain professional and collaborative relationships with teachers, staff, students, and families.
  • Be dependable, punctual, flexible, and willing to assist where student needs are greatest.
  • Follow all district policies and procedures regarding student safety, supervision, and confidentiality.
What Success Looks Like

A successful Kindergarten Classroom Aide helps create a classroom where students feel safe, cared for, and capable. The aide provides support when students need it while gradually reducing assistance as students become more independent. The goal is not simply to make tasks easier for students, but to help kindergarteners learn how to function successfully at school on their own.

Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with young children preferred.
  • Ability to remain patient and calm when supporting students with challenging behaviors or big emotions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to follow teacher direction while taking appropriate initiative.
  • Willingness to learn and consistently use school wide instructional and behavioral practices.
  • Paraprofessional Certification or Substitute Certificate
Physical Expectations

The position may require standing, walking, sitting on the floor, bending, lifting classroom materials, assisting young children, supervising outdoor activities, and responding quickly to student safety needs.

Above all, the Kindergarten Classroom Aide should be someone who genuinely enjoys young children, believes they are capable, and understands that every interaction is an opportunity to teach independence, responsibility, and belonging.
