NICU Advanced Practice Nurse Or Physician Assistant
The NICU Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) or Physician Assistant utilizes a patient-centered coordinated care model, demonstrating competencies in leadership, direct clinical practice, consultation/collaboration, coaching/guiding, research, and ethical decision-making. The APN works collaboratively with the practice/hospital team to assess, plan, and implement care for individuals with health and safety needs. Proficient in newborn resuscitation, intubation and stabilization, umbilical lines, PIV, arterial blood draw, ventilation management, needle aspiration and chest tubes, spinal tap, interpretation of x-rays, appropriate and efficient use of consultants.
NNP required or NNP eligible, PA should have completed a NICU fellowship. K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital is a Level III NICU at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
Responsibilities include providing medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician, performing and documenting accurate, complete, and relevant history and physical assessments, ordering, performing, and interpreting laboratory tests and diagnostic studies/procedures, managing general medical and surgical conditions, prescribing medication safely and effectively, seeking opportunities to promote Hackensack Meridian Health PA practice recognition, providing care that is patient- and family-centered, compassionate, and effective for the promotion of health and treatment of disease, practicing as a healthcare provider according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff, applying evidence-based and value-based medicine to systematically analyze and improve patient care practices and outcomes, evaluating patient/family transition of care planning, demonstrating clinical expertise through advanced assessment and procedural skills, translating best practice into clinical practice, providing culturally sensitive and educationally appropriate health management education to patients and families, facilitating consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among all members of the healthcare team, serving as an advocate for patients and families, identifying and addressing obstacles to care progression and escalating issues as appropriate, serving as a clinical resource for the multidisciplinary team, participating in organizational and departmental meetings, committees, and work groups as necessary, demonstrating the highest level of accountability for professional practice and adhering to ethical principles regarding patient confidentiality, informed consent, and adverse outcomes, promoting a collaborative work environment supporting the organizational mission, behavior expectations, values, and pillars, mentoring other PAs, precepting students in PA programs and participating in educational programs as a clinical expert, identifying patient/family educational needs and collaborating to implement appropriate teaching materials, promoting innovation by integrating new clinical knowledge into practice, participating in clinical research activities and disseminating findings through practice, education, presentations, and publications, identifying ethical care issues and coordinating interdisciplinary meetings to resolve them, complying with HMH and department-specific scope of services, policies and procedures as applicable to role, adhering to all HMH infection control and safety policies.
Qualifications include a graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited nursing program, a master's or doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, maintaining clinical competencies through continuing education and clinical practice, experience in a relevant patient care setting, national provider identifier (NPI), prescriptive authority through CDS and DEA registration according to New Jersey state law, collaborative agreement with physicians on staff, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Licenses and certifications required include NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License, Advanced Nurse Practitioner (w/ Master's Degree), BLS AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification, Board certified by AANP or ANCC, and NNP eligible. Required qualifications include successful completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education, NICU fellowship, current, unrestricted Physician Assistant License, Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA), Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and Proficiency with computer platforms, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite.
