Position: FIRE CAPTAIN - ELY
Location: Ely

The Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) is recruiting for one Fire Captain position located at the Ely Industrial Shop in Ely, Nevada. This position, under the supervision of the Battalion Chief, acts as a supervisor of a wildland fire module/hand crew with multiple firefighters that participate in all functional areas of wildland fire and resource management.

Responsibilities
  • Exercise leadership and implement the Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Respond to wildland fires, floods, and other emergencies.
  • Control wildland fires: build hand lines, fell trees, lay hose lines, direct nozzles, lead dozers, set backfires, direct aerial drops, provide structural protection, mop up and patrol fire areas.
  • Supervise or participate in presuppression activities: develop preplans and preattack plans, check fire access roads, gates, water supplies, and update dispatch response cards.
  • Supervise or participate in hazardous fuels mitigation: determine fuel types and loading, plan and implement fuel‑management activities including prescribed burning.
  • Supervise or participate in fire prevention activities: inspect prescribed‑burning areas, advise land owners, approve or deny fire permits, check campfires, inform the public, give safety presentations, conduct defensible‑space inspections, and post public‑education signs.
  • Train volunteer fire departments, cooperative fire agencies, and firefighting personnel: schedule classes or demonstrations, review materials and strategies, and provide on‑the‑job training.
  • Supervise or maintain fire apparatus and equipment: daily inspections, preventive maintenance schedules, routine maintenance, report mechanical problems, arrange repairs, and replace supplies.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Serve as a shift supervisor under general supervision of a Battalion Chief.
Qualifications
  • NWCG Firefighter I (FFT1 or higher) and NWCG Single Resource Boss qualification at the time of application, maintained during employment.
  • Associate’s degree in fire science or closely related field with three years of firefighting experience; OR high school diploma with four years of firefighting experience; OR one year as a Firefighter II in Nevada state service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of: tactics and strategy used in wildland firefighting.
  • Ability to:
    • Supervise a fire crew or Engine Company in any call‑out situation.
    • Apply the principles of the Incident Command System in incidents of moderate to high complexity.
    • Evaluate complex situations and request appropriate additional resources.
    • Provide training to assigned personnel.
    • Inspect, test, and ensure proper operation of all firefighting equipment.
    • Maintain records and prepare reports.
    • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
    • Apply principles of fire prevention, inspection, and investigation.
    • Deal effectively with victims, bystanders, and responding personnel in emergency situations.
