Storey County School District

The Storey County School District Board of Trustees is seeking an exceptional educational leader to serve as Superintendent and guide the District into its next chapter of growth, innovation, and community partnership. Storey County School District offers a rare opportunity to lead in a place where schools are central to community identity and relationships matter. Serving students from early childhood through high school, the District is intentionally small, allowing leaders to know students, staff, and families personally and to make decisions that have a visible and lasting impact.
Located in historic Virginia City—a National Historic Landmark—the District provides a learning environment unlike any other in Nevada. Families are deeply engaged, educators are committed to their community, and collaboration replaces bureaucracy. Leadership is nimble, innovative, and closely connected to student needs. While rich in history, Storey County sits at the center of Northern Nevada’s economic transformation, adjacent to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center and global employers such as Tesla and Panasonic.
These partnerships create exciting opportunities to expand career and technical education, STEM learning, and workforce‑ready pathways for students.
The District is also investing in its future through construction of a new K–8 school on the Virginia City High School campus, creating a unified K–12 educational complex that strengthens continuity and community connection. For the right leader, this role offers not just a position, but a purpose‑driven opportunity to shape the future of education in a truly distinctive place.
The Superintendent position offers a competitive annual salary range of $170,000 to $185,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. In addition to salary, the District provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Nevada does not have a state income tax, enhancing overall take‑home compensation. The District will also make employer contributions on behalf of the Superintendent to the Nevada Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS), providing long‑term retirement security.
QualificationsWhile not required, the Board also seeks candidates who meet the following preferred qualifications:
- Serves as a visible instructional leader committed to continuous improvement in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and student outcomes.
- Supports school principals and instructional staff through coaching, evaluation, and professional growth.
- Uses data and research to guide decisions that improve teaching and learning for all students.
- Maintains a clear focus on student achievement while balancing innovation with the realities of a small district setting.
- Clearly understands and respects the distinct roles of governance and administration.
- Works collaboratively with the Board of Trustees to implement Board‑adopted policies and advance district goals.
- Provides sound, well‑researched recommendations to support informed Board decision‑making.
- Demonstrates integrity, consistency, and professionalism in all interactions with the Board.
