Adaptive Physical Education Teacher

Range $50,761-$92,279 annually with Employer-paid retirement, dependent upon previous experience.

Terms of Employment

9 months or (185/189 days).

FLSA Status

Non‑exempt, salaried position assigned to the Licensed Employee Salary Schedule.

Position Summary

The Adapted Physical Education (APE) Teacher will provide developmental or corrective instruction in support of students with exceptional needs to access the general physical education curriculum. This itinerant position requires travel and provides services to all schools in the Lyon County School District. The teacher is expected to adhere to the District Professional Domains and Standards for Licensed Employees and will report directly to the Director of Special Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates knowledge of strategies and accommodations to assist students with disabilities to access curriculum and settings appropriate for Physical Education.
  • Designs coherent, differentiated instruction and student assessments aligned with State Standards in Physical Education at appropriate instructional levels.
  • Develops and maintains a weekly/monthly schedule and makes modifications to ensure students receive indicated APE services as outlined in their IEPs.
  • Conducts formal and informal assessment and observations for programmatic purposes, IEP review, and development.
  • Creates reports based on student assessment for parents/guardians and the IEP team.
  • Develops annual IEPs, three‑year re‑evaluations, and facilitates multidisciplinary team meetings for students on the caseload; participation may be requested.
  • Implements cooperative/consultative model in collaboration with the general physical education teacher.
  • Directs student services based on individual needs, including concurrent APE/PE programming, small‑group parallel activities, skill practice, or one‑on‑one intervention.
  • Maintains current caseload and electronic files with anecdotal and crucial information; keeps accurate service delivery logs.
  • Provides consultation to the general physical education specialist, special education teachers, teaching assistants, general education staff, and parents as needed.
  • Provides direction to special education paraprofessionals assisting students with disabilities in physical education.
  • Participates in staff meetings and professional development activities.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.

  • Proficient in the District's electronic IEP system, student data management systems, and email infrastructure.
  • Works cooperatively with students, parents, peers, administration, and community members.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law and District policy.
  • Acts as an active member of faculty and staff teams.
  • Provides education in the least restrictive environment with collegial collaboration.
  • Continuously improves professional competence.
  • Communicates effectively both in writing and orally.
  • Attends Handle with Care training.
Position Requirements

Education and Training:

  • Earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Completed three years of successful teaching experience in physical education, adapted physical education, special education programs, and/or related services.

Licenses and

Certifications:

  • Must possess or be able to acquire by time of appointment a teaching license issued by the Nevada Department of Education.
  • Hold certification in special education with an endorsement in adapted physical education.
  • Must hold CPR certification.
