JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: PARA-EDUCATOR II – SPECIAL EDUCATION

REPORTS TO: SITE ADMINISTRATION

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9-MONTHS (NOT Fewer Than Student Contact Days)

SALARY RANGE: Classified Salary Schedule 13-B $15.56 – $23.20 Employer/Employee Paid; $13.35 – $19.92 Employer Paid PERS

BENEFITS: Nevada State Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) – 20+ hrs. per week;
Employer paid Medical, Dental, Vision and Life Insurance – 25+ hrs. per week;
No State Tax

FLSA STATUS: Non‑Exempt

SUMMARY OF POSITION

Under the guidance of site administration and a certificated teacher, works with individual and/or small groups of students in a variety of settings, modeling necessary skills, following educational and behavioral plans, and providing support for special health care needs. Employees receive a variety of assignments including classroom support, lunchroom, playground, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Communicate with teachers and other district personnel to assist in evaluating progress and implementing IEP objectives.
  • Implement under the supervision of the supervising teacher instructional programs and lesson plans (e.g., reading, math, language comprehension, writing, computer) to review and reinforce learning concepts.
  • Maintain classroom equipment and work area to ensure a safe learning environment and meet mandated requirements.
  • Monitor students in various settings (e.g., rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, assemblies, field trips) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Promote good student habits and independence to improve student outcomes.
  • Under the supervision of the assigned teacher, review and revise instruction to students in individual and group activities (e.g., self‑esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills) to implement remediation goals and ensure student success.
  • Document students’ daily activities (e.g., behavior, completed assignments, on/off task time) to complete daily logs and hourly activity records.
  • Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders, including approved physical restraint techniques.
  • Model conversation, manners, clean‑up activities, listening, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior.
  • Monitor students’ daily schedule and behavior plan to maintain a safe environment.
  • Communicate with supervisory instructional staff and direct parents to teachers regarding student progress and IEP objectives.
  • Respond to emergency situations (e.g., injured students, conflicts) to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Administer basic first aid, medical assistance, and escort students to health care professionals as instructed by a health care professional.
  • Assist medically fragile students with mobility and personal hygiene tasks.
  • Attend meetings and in‑service training (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, Crisis Prevention Intervention) to acquire and convey relevant job information.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assist in identifying supports to aid students toward independence.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
WORK CONTACTS

Frequent contact with certificated personnel, students, and other district personnel. Limited contact with parents.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Basic math (including fractions, percentages, and ratios); grammar and punctuation; reading fluency and comprehension; health and safety standards; oral and written communication skills with correct English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and math.
