PhD Position In Biomedical Engineering
The Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund, is offering a PhD position in Biomedical Engineering. Lund University, founded in 1666, is consistently ranked among the world's top universities. With around 46,000 students and 8,500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö, the university is dedicated to understanding, explaining, and improving our world and the human condition.
The doctoral project will be conducted at the Division of Biomedical Engineering within IKVL, with placement at LTH in the ultrasound research group. The group includes another doctoral student and a researcher who will serve as a co-supervisor. The research group values a positive work environment characterized by respect and consideration in our relationships, striving to create conditions that promote job satisfaction, development, and participation for all employees.
The research group is recruiting a full-time doctoral student (100%) starting on September 1, 2026 (or as agreed).
The PhD project will involve theoretical and experimental modeling of the response of magnetic nanoparticles in a magnetic field. Mechanisms for potential therapeutic effects of various nanoparticle shapes will be studied, for example through lysosomal rupture. The project will also aim to conduct the first demonstration of antibody-guided imaging and potential therapy using magnetomotive ultrasound. Validation will be carried out partly using phantoms (test objects) and will also include cell studies.
Lund University offers benefits, generous annual leave, and an advantageous occupational pension scheme. More information about being a Lund University employee can be found on the University website.
The PhD student will:
- Conduct research within the project described above. This includes the design, planning, and execution of studies, as well as the development of phantom and cell models and performing measurements on these.
- Participate in the supervision of master's thesis projects.
- Travel and present research findings at scientific conferences and visit collaborating partners.
Additional responsibilities related to the role may be assigned.
Necessary qualifications for the job include:
- A background in Engineering Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Physics, or equivalent (at least 240 ECTS credits, of which 60 ECTS credits are at an advanced level).
- Experience in theoretical and experimental modeling as well as signal processing, preferably with applications in biomedical engineering, particularly ultrasound technology.
- Very good ability to communicate in English, both spoken and written.
We expect you, as a person, to be meticulous and goal-oriented.
Meritorious are:
- Knowledge of ultrasound physics, specifically magnetomotive ultrasound.
- Experience of experimental studies involving antibodies, bacteria, and/or cells.
- Experience in delivering presentations at scientific conferences.
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who:
- Have completed a second-cycle degree.
- Have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses.
- Have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.
The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research, and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
Type of employment:
Limit of tenure, four years according to HF 5 kap 7§.
Applications are to be submitted via the University's recruitment system. The application should include a CV and a personal letter justifying your interest in the position and how it matches your qualifications. The application should also include a degree certificate or equivalent and any other document to which you would like to draw attention (copies of grade transcripts, details of referees, letters of recommendation, etc.)
Welcome to apply!
