Doctoral Student Within Analyzing Neural Population Activity To Predict Neurological Disease

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top universities. The University has around 46,000 students and 8,500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The lab Neural Basis for Sensorimotor Control, Department of Experimental Medical Science, explores neurophysiological aspects of how the brain works. This is done using advanced neurophysiological methods and advanced mathematical analyses of neurophysiological data. We apply the identified operational mechanisms to make predictions of the evolving character of different neurological and psychiatric disease. The work place consists of two different research groups, which both are active in neurophysiology, in total comprising 10-15 people.

These people represent a profoundly cross-disciplinary environment with backgrounds in mathematics, computer science, psychiatry, neurology, psychology. The environment is highly familiar and stimulating for different types of discussions, and all work categories socialize freely. In addition, the lab provides an extensive contact network into research industry and leading European universities/institutions such as Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, Technical University of Munich.

The main task for a doctoral student is to devote yourself to your doctoral studies, therefore you will be both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. The main task is within neurophysiological research to improve predictions of epilepsy, Parkinson and other diseases. You will also be expected to participate in teaching and other work at the department, but limited to maximum 20% of work hours.

The admission requirements are: a second-cycle degree, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the second-cycle level, or in some other way acquired essentially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country. Good ability to utilize the doctoral study.

Requirements for the position are: full degree in civil engineering (or equiv) within computer science, mathematics or physics; skill in linear algebra; skill in multidimensional analysis; ability to work independently; cooperation ability.

Additional merits would be if you have earlier experience of: analysis of neurophysiological data; working with analysis of the dynamic properties of brain activity in time series of spatially separated EEG channels; applying optical flow analysis; applying principal component analysis on multichannel data; pedagogical competence.

Great emphasis will be placed on whether the applicant, based on their experience and expertise, is deemed to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral program.

Lund University is a government agency, which means that you get special benefits, generous holidays and a favourable occupational pension.
