Job Overview
Health Physics Equipment Technologist – responsible for calibration, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of health physics instrumentation at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). The role supports operations, engineering, and research activities in a controlled radiological environment.

- Calibrate, test, troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on portable and fixed radiation survey instruments, contamination monitors, air sampling equipment, dosimetry systems, and other health physics devices.
- Use sealed radiation calibration sources and check sources in accordance with approved procedures and regulations.
- Maintain detailed calibration and maintenance procedures, records, and documentation.
- Perform acceptance testing, configuration verification, and operational checks on new, repaired, or modified instruments.
- Maintain accurate logs of calibrations, functional checks, repairs, and test results in approved databases.
- Assist in developing and improving calibration methods, maintenance practices, and quality control checks.
- Evaluate and recommend health physics equipment, calibration systems, spare parts, and related tools based on performance and operational needs.
- Coordinate scheduling of calibrations, maintenance, and functional checks to ensure equipment availability.
- Provide technical support to radiation protection, operations, and engineering personnel regarding proper use and limitations of health physics equipment.
- Assist in troubleshooting field-reported instrument issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Support operations at nuclear or other high‑hazard facilities by ensuring equipment readiness, calibration, and maintenance.
- Associate degree in electronics, instrumentation, radiation protection, or a related technical discipline with at least 3 years of progressive related experience, or a high‑school diploma with 5 years of experience in electronics or health physics equipment.
- Understanding of radiation detection principles, health physics concepts, and calibration methodologies (preferred, but can be trained).
- Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings.
- Experience working safely with radioactive calibration sources and controlled radiological environments.
- Pass the Radiological Control Technician Core and Site Academics; participation in the Human Reliability Program may be required.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Primary work location:
Mercury, NV (approximately 80 miles from Las Vegas). - Work schedule:
4/10s, Monday through Thursday (subject to change). - Pre‑placement physical examination, including drug screening, required; MSTS mandates substance‑abuse policy with random testing.
- Must obtain and maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance (U.S. citizenship, ≥18 years). Clearance may require background investigation and counterintelligence evaluation.

CompensationHourly range: $29.98 – $44.97. Salary determined by position market value and candidate experience.
