Senior Electrical Engineer

Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Our MISSION is to help ensure the security of the United States and its allies by providing high-hazard experimentation and incident response capabilities through operations, engineering, education, field, and integration services and by acting as environmental stewards to the Site's Cold War legacy.

MSTS is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer for a Facility/System Engineering position at our PULSE facility. The PULSE facility is an underground nuclear facility located within the Forward Areas of the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) that supports Subcritical Experiments performed by the National Weapons Laboratories.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supports maintaining overall cognizance of assigned facility systems, providing systems engineering support for operations and maintenance, and technical support of line management safety responsibilities for ensuring continued system operational readiness.
  • Validates physical configuration of assigned systems. Maintains and updates system documents for Configuration Management (CM). Understands the functions and performance criteria for assigned systems per the Safety Basis, and acts as the subject matter expert for assigned systems.
  • Supports the In-service-Inspection and Technical Surveillance Requirement execution of assigned systems.
  • Devises imaginative, thorough, and practical solutions requiring evaluation of standards and processes. Solutions may be unique.
  • Contributes to development of engineering solutions employing new principles, concepts, and/or techniques. Demonstrates advanced communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment. Recognized Subject Matter Expert by internal colleagues. May be lead author on paper/poster.
  • Contributes to strategies, reports and technical proposals.
  • Develops processes, procedures, work instructions.
  • Performs design and technical activities that require interpretation and correlation of codes and standards, complex computer software, and unique processes and procedures tailored for the work being executed.
  • Serves as an internal subject matter expert in their discipline and is recognized by their colleagues as such.
  • Coordinates execution of assigned projects.
  • Prepares procurement requirements and work statements for subcontracts and evaluates bids.
  • Serves as lead on teams requiring coordination with other teams. Coordinates work with other project team members.
  • May monitor work of and provide guidance to skilled technicians and other support personnel or craft.
  • Defines training program for less experienced staff in engineering skills. Advisor on work of less experienced staff.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees
  • Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor's degree in engineering
  • Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB)
  • Or Professional Engineer license
  • Plus at least 5 years' relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • Knowledge of how codes and standards of other disciplines affect their discipline.
  • Knowledge is typically within one technical discipline or related disciplines.
  • Ability to interpret codes and standards applicable to the position.
  • Demonstrated desire to learn and innovate.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation & control, electrical, mechanical or electromechanical components.
  • Should be self-motivated and able to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ideally, the applicant will have strong time-management skills. Be well organized, maintain safe work habits and have a broad range of technical interests and education.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write reports and technical documents.
  • The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada).
  • Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change).
