Overview
The Nevada Department of Corrections is looking to fill a vacant Correctional Caseworker Specialist 2 (CCWS2) position at Ely State Prison. The incumbent will be under the supervision of the Correctional Caseworker Specialist
3. They will participate in classification committees and inmate reviews, evaluate files to assist in decision‑making, document custody, housing and job changes, conduct classification hearings, and manage a caseload that includes special status inmates. They will monitor due process rights, respond to inmate communications, investigate issues regarding inmate funds and property, coordinate inmate transfers and cell moves, chair or sit on disciplinary committees, process paperwork and maintain case files, track disciplinary actions, and prepare parole progress reports regarding inmate history and activity prior to and during incarceration.
They will coordinate inmate releases with institutional staff and provide notification of discharge to inmates, their families, staff and local law enforcement. They will strive to resolve issues prior to inmate grievances and investigate specific inmate concerns.
Correctional Casework Specialists perform duties involving the evaluation and classification of inmates within State correctional facilities; maintain comprehensive inmate records including personal data, legal data, criminal history, institutional adjustment, program needs and achievements, classification history and rule infractions as stipulated under NRS Chapter 209; evaluate, develop and implement plans for inmate program participation.
Responsibilities- Conduct routine casework assignments within established time frames to determine need for reclassification; analyze case factors that influence classification decisions (changes in legal status, progress in service of sentence, parole decisions, achievements, infractions); apply laws, rules and regulations and verify data contained in case history files, investigative reports and interviews; explain and advise inmates on decisions based on Nevada Revised Statutes, court case law, administrative regulations and institutional procedures.
- Serve as a member of the facility’s Disciplinary Committee; review inmate case files, investigative reports, witness statements and evidence; determine guilt and assign appropriate sanctions in accordance with the Code of Penal Discipline; seek review and approval by the Associate Warden of Programs.
- Serve as a member of the Institutions/Facilities Classification Committee during regular reviews, post Parole Board reviews, post Disciplinary Committee reviews and special classification issues; present data and participate in the classification process.
- Prepare parole progress reports detailing inmate history and activity; interview inmates for input, request release plans and verification letters, and review completed reports with the inmate and supervisor prior to submission to the Parole Board; represent the department at Parole Board hearings as needed.
- Assist inmates in obtaining work assignments by assessing abilities, recommending job placements to the Classification Committee, and documenting work performance and time credits.
- Respond to inquiries concerning sentence structure and credits; review work status through work history, institutional files and applicable laws on parole and discharge eligibility.
- Monitor custody level status and housing changes daily; review incident reports, interview inmates and document findings; ensure due process and complete required reports for supervisor review.
- Provide guidance on institutional rules, program opportunities, personal or family issues, emergencies and medical or psychological needs; document actions and referrals to ensure compliance with due process procedures.
- Respond to legal matters involving inmates by addressing inquiries from the Attorney General’s Office and other agencies; conduct research to develop written responses.
