Overview

TESTING DATE: MAY 4, 2026. Candidates may be hired as Deputy Sheriff I or Deputy Sheriff II.

Deputy Sheriff I:
Entry-level with no/minimal prior law enforcement experience and training. Salary: $31.36 per hour. Essential functions are outlined in the job posting.

Deputy Sheriff II:
Requires a current Nevada POST Category I Certificate (or reciprocal from another state). A certificate must be attached to the application. Salary starts at $35.08 per hour and is commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities
  • Detention: inmate counts, head counts, inmate movement for court appearances, medical care, and visits; safety checks; surveillance and reporting; handling inmates with mental health issues.
  • Inmate health and welfare: ensure food, clothing, medicine, and hygiene; inspect living conditions for policy and federal compliance.
  • Customer service: screen visitors and calls; provide information per policies and procedures.
  • Court appearances: transport inmates, provide courthouse security, update legal paperwork, respond to emergencies.
  • Medical treatment: provide first aid, triage, assist with medications, document medical issues, support medical staff security.
  • Extraditions: transport inmates to other facilities, coordinate with outside agencies.
  • Civil process: locate and serve subpoenas, warrants, and related documents; execute court orders to attach funds and assets.
  • Court services: organize probable cause forms, copies, logs, lists, and provide court security as required.
  • All assignments: training, first aid, safe operation of vehicles and office equipment; uphold County integrity; preserve crime scenes and handle evidence; act as coroner as defined under NRS 259.020.
Qualifications
  • High School education/GED; must be 21 years of age at hire; US citizen; no disqualifying convictions; no DUI within last 5 years; no domestic violence conviction; no disqualifying drug activity in 5 years.
  • Knowledge of public relations, laws, criminal investigation concepts, safety procedures, first aid/CPR, computers, and effective communication.
  • Skills in safety standards, policy interpretation, emergency decision-making, crime scene preservation, and dealing with diverse populations.
  • Valid Nevada Class C Driver’s License;
    Category 3 Nevada POST Certification (obtained during employment or prior); CPR and First Aid certification within 6 months of employment.
Physical Demands & Working Environment

Physical requirements include traversing difficult terrain, restraining individuals, lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, running, and exposure to outdoor conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
