Position: Surgery RN PACU - Per Diem*
Location: Gardnerville

Important: because of per diem status, 15% will be added to the hourly rate. Per diem employees are offered work on an “as‑needed” basis.

Position Summary

Manages individualized, goal‑directed nursing care through use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

Position Requirements
  • Minimum Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • License

    Required:

    Current NV Nursing license
  • Certification

    Required:

    BLS, ACLS, PALS (may obtain within 90 days of hire)
  • Minimum

    Work Experience:

    • Demonstrated proficiency in acute care nursing, knowledge, and skills
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Must show initiative, maturity, and effectiveness in dealing with people
    • Appreciation of and desire to be part of a healthcare team
Position Essential Functions

Patient Care

  • Assesses and diagnoses patient and family needs to provide quality care to assigned patients.
  • Verification of patient identity, operative procedure, operative site, surgeon, consents, patient’s allergies, NPO status and time of last void.
  • Assesses psychological status, level of understanding, perception of surgery and anxiety level.
  • Obtains pre‑operative medical history and documents clearly in the patient record in accordance with department policy and procedures.
  • Checks current history and physical, laboratory results, execution of pre‑operative orders, and results of ordered diagnostic tests.
  • Reviews completed chart with the anesthesiologist on duty as necessary.

Communication

  • Develops, discusses, and communicates a realistic plan of care with each patient/family/significant other to address all identified needs.
  • Develops patient/family teaching and discharge plan, ensuring patients/families are adequately informed of perioperative instructions.
  • Follows procedures/preferences for pre‑operative anesthesia interventions.
  • Communicates with and keeps family informed.

Judgment

  • Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures as needed for patient care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital policies and procedures for administering, transcribing, and recording medications.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of commonly used medications: action, dose, and side effects.
  • Observes the 10 rights of medication administration: right med, right dose, right time, right route, right patient, right education, right documentation, right to refuse, right assessment, right evaluation.
  • Demonstrates proper procedures in all medication administration methods.
  • Initiates and maintains IV access according to hospital policy and procedures.
  • Identifies priorities and executes nursing care accordingly.
  • Provides emotional support and comfort measures.
  • Provides information or explanation to patients and their families.
  • Applies and monitors principles of aseptic technique throughout the perioperative period.
  • Assures safe transfer/transport of patient to and from the operating room.

Documentation

  • Maintains up to date accurate documentation of nursing care to ensure integration of information for use by the health care team and quality care.
  • Pre‑operative and post‑operative nursing assessment is complete and accurate per policy.
  • Medication administration record reflects full signature and title of nurse administering medication, time given, reason for omission, and site for injection (if applicable).
  • Demonstrates proper access and documentation of narcotics in pyxis and EMR.
  • Accurately and promptly documents unusual occurrences noted during the perioperative phase.

Per diem positions have no guaranteed hours or set schedule. The position will fill in for individuals who take unplanned and/or planned time off.
