Outdoor Program Specialist

This posting is intended to fill two positions: the Outdoor Program Specialist. The position is on-call and does not qualify for benefits.

Performs intermediate work providing supervision support for youth participating in the Outdoor Behavioral Health Program. Performs a variety of other duties in support of the Juvenile Probation department, as requested, and performs related tasks as apparent or assigned.

This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

• Assists the Outdoor Behavioral Health Program supervisor with juveniles in adventure-based programs, community service, trail work and other community-based events including overnight trips.
• Communicates with on-call staff responsible for proper radio communication with Douglas County Dispatch.
• Performs a variety of clerical duties including filing, answering phones, documenting activities and contacts, completing reports as appropriate and necessary, and utilizing computer software programs.
• Follows the directives given by the Outdoor Behavior Health Program Supervisor/Senior Juvenile Probation Officer.
• Works under pressure, exercises good judgment and makes sound and timely decisions in emergency and non-emergency situations.
• Assists with various outdoor activities including kayaking, rock-climbing, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snow camping, backpacking, avalanche training, snowboarding, adventure challenge course and wilderness survival.
• Monitors and maintains the safety of juveniles during transportation in the Outdoor Education Program.
• Drives a motor vehicle and transports juveniles to specified locations.
• Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
• Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.

• High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience working with at risk youth or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Must be a minimum of 21 years of age at date of employment.

• Valid driver’s license.
• First Aid and CPR certification, within two (2) months of date of employment.

• This work requires the occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force.
• Work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands; frequently requires standing; occasionally requires walking, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling.
• Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communication and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
• Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
• Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g., business office, light traffic).
• Work regularly requires exposure to blood borne pathogens (may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment); frequently requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to outdoor weather conditions in all seasons; occasionally requires work near moving mechanical parts, working in high or precarious places and exposure to fumes or airborne particles.

• Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
• Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background/screening.
