Truancy Prevention Specialist (Part Time)

Position Summary

Under direct supervision the Truancy Officer is responsible to assist in resolving attendance problems of students of compulsory school age by working with students, parents, school personnel, community leaders, and appropriate Tribal staff. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Responsibilities
  • Track school attendance of all native students within the jurisdiction of the Washoe Tribal Communities.
  • Confer regularly with school principals and vice principals regarding truancy of native students.
  • Confer regularly with Education and Social Services staff.
  • Work closely with school attendance secretaries, counselors, teachers and tribal and local law enforcement departments.
  • Check daily attendance of native students with a history of attendance problems.
  • Contact and confer with parents or guardians regarding student attendance issues.
  • Review student records to determine if further investigation or action is necessary which may include truancy hearing or conferencing with school staff.
  • Refer student to other departments who have exceptional barriers which interferes with school attendance.
  • Prepare cases for formal truancy hearings.
  • Visit student homes to ensure attendance at school.
  • Serve as liaison between school and parents, the courts, tribal and community agencies, and law enforcement personnel pertaining to truancy proceedings.
  • Be present and visible in the tribal communities during school hours and provide immediate service to students who are on the street or in public places.
  • Provide a monthly narrative summarizing contacts and outcome.
  • Provide a monthly report reflecting the number of truancy cases addressed; truancy cases referred; resolution of the cases addressed; number of identified habitual truants; number of cases referred for prosecution; youth placed on probation for truancy issues; meetings held with parents, children and schools; educational classes conducted to address truancy issues.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with youth may be substituted on a year for year basis in lieu of a degree.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.
  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications
  • Knowledge of the Tribal Law and Order Code, school attendance policies, and applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice and desire to help when dealing with people.
  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.
  • Ability to make decisions and exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to prepare accurate, complete, and legible reports and present detailed, accurate, and objective oral presentations.
  • Ability to comprehend, retain, and recall factual information, and learn and apply acquired skills and techniques to the performance of assignment duties.
  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).
  • Skill in making effective decisions in emergency situations.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
