Position Overview
Old Dominion Freight Line is seeking a dedicated Line Haul Driver to operate tractor‑trailer combinations over long distances, delivering freight with precision and reliability.
Drivers typically work a 5‑day workweek, with opportunities to be home most nights and maintain a good work‑life balance. The average annual pay is about $107,000 and the role includes a tuition reimbursement program for recent trucking school graduates.
Responsibilities- Operate the vehicle safely within DOT regulations, including hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and hazardous material transport, and meet or exceed medical standards.
- Perform pre‑trip inspections and ensure loads are secure and stable during transit.
- Use tablets or phones to record delivery information, navigate, and report status.
- Unload freight and secure it using hand trucks, pallet jacks, or other equipment.
- Respond to around‑the‑clock freight movements and be available for extended periods away from home.
- Maintain accurate logs and documentation per company and DOT requirements.
- Assist with other duties as assigned by management.
- Valid Class A CDL with endorsement for double/triple trailers, tanker, and hazardous material.
- Minimum of 12 months tractor‑trailer driving experience or graduation from a state‑certified truck driving school, plus successful completion of the Old Dominion truck driver training program.
- Ability to read, write, speak English, and perform basic math calculations.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations related to driving, hours of service, inspection, and maintenance.
- Physical capability to lift, move, and handle freight up to 500lb, and perform frequent standing, bending, and climbing.
- Clean driving record; must pass required drug and alcohol tests.
- Must meet or exceed Department of Transportation medical standards and successfully complete orientation and training.
- Drive 8–11 hours; stand, walk, bend, squat, and climb frequently; lift and pull freight up to 500lb.
- Work in all weather conditions, varying noise levels, and both enclosed and open environments.
- Operate manual transmissions and vehicle safety systems.
- Use cognitive skills for navigation, document handling, and safety awareness.
Base hourly rate ranges from $20.15 to $37.68, depending on route.
