Highway Maintenance Supervisor 1
The Nevada Department of Transportation is recruiting for a Highway Maintenance Supervisor 1 in District 1, Beatty, on Crew 123. Incumbents function as first‑line supervisors who train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
Responsibilities- Manage maintenance crews responsible for conducting summer betterment projects and winter incident management, road maintenance, preservation, flood control and cleanup, snow removal, and winter anti‑icing / de‑icing as policy requires.
- Plan, coordinate, monitor, and inspect routine maintenance activities and major betterment projects.
- Coordinate equipment, material, and resource needs; monitor work progress and productivity of maintenance crews.
- Prepare, review, and evaluate reports to track productivity, costs, resources, and equipment usage.
- Assist department staff to identify upcoming betterment needs; participate in betterment reviews; assist in preparing budget estimates and project planning charts.
- Assist district leadership with personnel issues and provide training, support, and guidance in employee evaluations and disciplinary actions.
- Respond to emergency situations related to traffic control for incidents, debris removal, or other unplanned events requiring immediate response.
- Oversee skilled and semi‑skilled personnel engaged in restoring roadway surfaces and related infrastructure; supervise specialty crews (lighting, signage, pavement marking, landscaping).
- Plan and schedule work; purchase materials; schedule equipment for routine and betterment activities; operate equipment as necessary.
- Identify roadway deficiencies; estimate materials and production time; provide project justification; determine personnel, maintenance, and equipment needs; assign tasks to subordinate personnel.
- Review engineering blueprints, schematics, and standard plans; reference federal, state, local, and departmental procedures and regulations.
- Prepare and submit required reports to track productivity, unit costs, stockpile and equipment usage, training, vehicle accident and property damage, projected work schedules, and project summaries.
- Apply cost accounting codes as prescribed in the Maintenance Management System Manual.
- Mix salt and sand stockpiles; operate loaders; apply anti‑icing chemicals; remove snow with dump trucks and run spreaders; operate motor graders; construct and maintain brine‑making facilities.
- Maintain radio contact with base station, maintenance personnel, and law‑enforcement agencies during storms or emergencies; act as incident commander until proper authority arrives.
- Prepare work program recommendations; review and monitor established work programs and proposed encroachments by various agencies.
- Access and use information from ITS, RWS, and meteorological data to determine optimal maintenance timing.
- Maintain hazardous materials binder; record new employee training; update MSDS; conduct safety meetings.
- Contact public and private entities for required permits and authorizations; monitor permit issuance by the Right‑of‑Way Division; disallow work if not properly permitted.
- Oversee contractors’ work (micro‑resurfacing, slurry seals, janitorial services); respond to customer service work orders.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Review potential project scopes, design plans, and completed projects for compliance with contract and quality of work.
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- One (1) year of experience as lead worker of a highway maintenance crew, including assigning and overseeing the work of lower‑level personnel, providing input on performance evaluations, and assisting the supervisor in laying out roadway or specialty maintenance work; or
- Two (2) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker III in Nevada State service; or
- Equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in highway maintenance and construction; stockpile reporting.
