The Learning Center makes it our mission to work as a team with the IU Southeast teaching and learning community to assist in student recruitment, retention, and success by providing educated and nurturing writing conversations in 1-on-1 consultations, workshops, class visits, and website resources that improve the writing knowledge and confidence of our students in all discipline. The Assistant Learning Center Manager (ALCM) assists with the daily operations and strategic development of the university's Learning Center, with a specific focus on writing tutoring. The ALCM provides face-to-face, etutoring, and online consulting for students, along with supervision of peer consultants and administrative support for the Learning Center.

Department Specific Responsibilities
  • Uses current pedagogies, best practices, and research to tutor individual students through face-to-face or online writing consultations.
  • Proactively assesses student needs.
  • Serves as a student-facing employee, regularly meeting with students, faculty and staff to assist with questions, make referrals, and serve as a resource.
  • Works with the manager to staff and maintain the Center's services and operations, including, scheduling, staffing, logistics, and answering phone and emails. Identifies peak times and drop-in tutoring hours to best serve students.
  • Presents to various classes, as requested.
  • Manages social media for the Center.
  • Stays current with and ensures compliance of law, legislation, research, and trends in academic support services, writing pedagogy, service-delivery, higher education, and best practices. Based on those, works with the manager to develop and implement policies, strategies, and procedures. Recommends service enhancements.
  • Maintains records and prepares monthly reports on usage, outcomes, and effectiveness of services.
  • Promotes access to academic resources for all students.
  • Collaborates with staff, faculty, and departments to identify student needs and promote the Center.
  • Recruits, hires, and trains a team of peer writing consultants. Identifies content and support needed.
  • Provides ongoing supervision, coaching, and evaluation of peer writing consultants.
  • Schedules peer writing consultants to maintain consistent service hours.
General Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives that offer support for students in crisis, facing adversity or challenges, or who belong to an under-represented or minority student population.
  • Interfaces directly with students by attending student programming events, advising student organization leaders, meeting 1-on-1 to discuss support needs, and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student services initiatives and objectives. Places an emphasis on confidentiality of student concerns, university policy compliance, and a culture of care within all direct student interactions.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student support goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student programs and initiatives.
  • Projects outcomes for support services offered at the program, department/division, or campus level. Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student support initiatives against projected outcomes; regularly prepares reports on impact to students and budget and may present to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
  • Serves on committees and performs student support research across the field of higher education and at peer institutions to identify and recommend best practices.
  • Plans and coordinates communications for student support initiatives to ensure student participation, inclusion, and engagement.
  • May provide guidance to other student support staff; makes process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.
