Surface Mount Technology; SMT Engineer

This position is located at Samtec's Main Location in New Albany, IN.

The Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Engineer is a self‑motivated contributor working with internal and external customers to assist in the design and development of new and existing products, provide processing‑related technical customer support and research new and improved methods for processing Samtec interconnects. A thorough understanding of SMT electronic assembly including solder printing processes, pick & place, reflow thermal profiling, automatic inspection, cleaning, x‑ray analysis, electrical / functional testing and SMT troubleshooting is required.

• Member of a cross‑functional team comprised of design engineering, manufacturing, quality, sales and marketing to support existing product improvement, customer quality issues and sales and marketing strategies.
• Understand every aspect of a full SMT line to help customers troubleshoot processing issues they encounter with Samtec interconnects. This may include occasional travel to the customer’s location for hands‑on guidance but most of this work is done remotely.
• Assist new product design and develop processing recommendations, including:
  • Printed wiring board footprint layout
  • Solder stencil layout
  • Solder joint classification
  • Pick and place requirements
  • Shipping packaging requirements
  • Rework procedure
• Review and approve engineering drawings (printed wiring boards, solder stencils, connectors, etc.).
• Assist in internal equipment maintenance and procurement.

• Minimum 5 years of manufacturing with a focus in SMT process engineering formal training and/or work experience.
• Self‑starter with strong organizational and time‑management skills.
• Demonstrated problem‑solving ability and attention to detail.
• Strong technical writing ability.
• Solid understanding of statistics, process control and reliability standards (IPC, JEDEC, MIL).
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent follow‑up skills.
• Proficiency with MS Office applications.
• Experience in Solid Works, AutoCAD, Gerber or other engineering design, modeling or simulation software desirable.

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent is required.
