Recycle – Baler Operator for Floyd County Solid Waste Department is responsible for operating equipment/heavy machinery, hauling trash/recycled items, and maintaining facilities and equipment.

DUTIES
  • Operates various vehicles, trailers, and equipment to collect and process recyclable materials, including but not limited to baler, truck, pallet jack, and forklift.
  • Collects and separates comingled recyclable materials to maintain acceptable material quality.
  • Assists patrons, including providing instructions, demonstrations, pamphlets, and/or brochures.
  • Monitors drop-off sites to identify existing and potential problems. Resolves problems and/or notifies Director of needs.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license/CDL license and demonstrated safe driving record.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to meet all employer and department hiring and retention requirements, including ability to pass drug test.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department policies and procedures, warehouse operations and equipment, and safety techniques and skills.
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and techniques relative to solid waste management and ability to apply these principles and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous materials and applicable federal, state, and local regulations concerning recycling operations and hazardous materials, and ability to provide safety information to general public.
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and ability to prepare correspondence and various detailed reports as required.
  • Ability to properly operate various hand and/or power tools in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, air nozzle and compressor, drivers, ratchet, gauges, steam cleaner, and broom.
  • Ability to operate various machinery and/or equipment in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, truck, pallet jack, baler and forklift.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect.
  • Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department information and records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to comply with employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written and oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision, with others in a team environment, and work rapidly for long periods.
  • Ability to occasionally work evenings, extended hours, and weekends.
