Job Summary

Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing intermediate level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.

Job Description

What you’ll do:

Fault Analysis
  • Identify the root causes of system failures or malfunctions by examining data, conducting investigations, and utilizing analytical techniques to pinpoint protective relay issues on the Bulk Electric System.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of Protection and Controls schemes such as line protections, transformer protections, generator, and bus protections.
  • Understand Protection and Control design concepts and prefer AEP‑specific designs.
  • Review oscillography and sequential event records to determine causes of operations.
  • Troubleshoot issues with relay settings.

    Provide guidance, exercise judgment and discretion, lead and coordinate work activities of others, and ensure compliance with company policies and external regulations. Promote engineering professionalism and standards.

    Develop plans, establish measurable goals, coordinate inputs for projected costs, use scheduling techniques, and initiate corrective actions when objectives are not met.
  • Problem Solving & Initiative:
    Clarify, resolve, and initiate solutions to routine and complex problems, demonstrate the ability to break problems into component steps, and propose new ideas and approaches.
  • Communication:
    Coordinate work of other engineers, develop, review, or prepare reports on complex technical subjects, lead and facilitate meetings, and possess collaborative and consensus‑building skills.
  • Decision Making:
    Make decisions affecting plans and goals based on uncertain inputs, analyze options and risks, and consider impacts on operations.
  • Business Awareness & Characteristics:
    Understand AEP’s competitive position, set and manage project budgets, and recognize how decisions affect AEP’s expenses and revenue.
Requirements

What we’re looking for:

Engineer/Engineering Technologist Associate SG6
  • Entry level for new graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in engineering in an ABET‑accredited program.
  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination is encouraged and preferred.
Acceptable alternatives
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non‑ABET) plus a PE license in any U.S. state.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non‑ABET) plus a Master’s or PhD from a university with an ABET‑accredited bachelor’s program.
Engineer/Engineering Technologist SG7
  • Typical experience of 2‑4 years or more, with a Bachelor’s degree in an ABET‑accredited program.
  • Masters in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program may qualify for entry at this level.
Acceptable alternative
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non‑ABET) plus a Master’s or PhD from a university with an ABET‑accredited bachelor’s program.
Engineer/Engineering Technologist Senior SG8
  • Typical experience of 4 or more years with a Bachelor’s degree in an ABET‑accredited program.
  • Or 2 years of experience with a Master’s degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • PhD holders from an ABET‑accredited program may also be considered.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred.
Acceptable alternative
  • Bachelor’s degree (non‑ABET) plus a Master’s or PhD from a university with an ABET‑accredited bachelor’s program.
Engineer/Engineer Technologist Principal SG9
  • Typical experience of 8 or more years with a Bachelor’s degree in an ABET‑accredited program.
  • Or 6 years of experience with a Master’s or PhD from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is preferred unless waived by EVP.
Acceptable alternative
  • Bachelor’s degree (non‑ABET) plus a Master’s or PhD from a university with an ABET‑accredited bachelor’s program.
  • A degree in engineering technology is preferred; engineering degrees will also be considered.
