Supports civil engineering and geotechnical activities for utility infrastructure projects, including electric transmission, distribution, substation, and renewable energy developments. This role combines civil site design and geotechnical support, assisting with field investigations, foundation design inputs, and preparation of engineering documentation under the guidance of senior engineers.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist in performing civil engineering design for utility site development, including grading, drainage, erosion control, and site layout
- Support geotechnical engineering efforts related to utility infrastructure such as substations, transmission lines, and related civil works
- Monitor geotechnical drilling activities and field investigations, ensuring data quality and adherence to project requirements
- Prepare and document soil boring logs based on field data and drilling observations
- Assist with development of geotechnical reports, including interpretation of subsurface conditions and engineering recommendations
- Support foundation design efforts by reviewing soil data and providing input into design calculations (e.g., drilled shafts, spread footings, shallow foundations)
- Coordinate with civil, geotechnical, and electrical engineering teams to support multidisciplinary project delivery
- Assist in preparing engineering calculations, technical reports, drawings, and design documentation
- Participate in site visits, field inspections, and constructability reviews as needed
- Apply applicable industry codes, standards, and safety requirements in all design and field activities
- Support QA/QC processes by incorporating feedback and ensuring accuracy of deliverables
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (required)
- 0–2 years of experience in civil or geotechnical engineering (internships/co-ops acceptable)
- Foundational knowledge of civil engineering principles, including site design and basic geotechnical concepts
- Understanding of soil mechanics, subsurface investigations, and foundation systems
- Familiarity with civil design and/or geotechnical analysis tools (e.g., Civil 3D, LPile, or similar) is a plus
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, boring logs, and technical reports
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn in both office and field settings
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within 6–12 months
- Exposure to civil site design (grading, drainage, or land development)
- Experience supporting geotechnical field investigations or drilling activities
- Familiarity with utility or infrastructure projects (electric, gas, telecom, or water)
Job Type & Location
This is a permanent position based out of New Albany, OH.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $31.25 - $35.10/hr.
