Role Summary The Fire System Technician is responsible for the installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of fire alarm and fire suppression systems within data center facilities. This role ensures all Fire Life Safety (FLS) systems remain fully operational and compliant with applicable codes, standards, and Meta requirements. The technician works under the direction of site leadership and coordinates closely with Fac Ops teams to maintain 24/7/365 critical infrastructure availability.
Key Responsibilities Installation & Programming Install all components of fire alarm systems including control panels, sensors, smoke/heat detectors, VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus), and notification appliances Install and maintain fire suppression systems (pre-action sprinkler, clean agent, dry/wet systems) Wire, program, and calibrate fire alarm and detection equipment per manufacturer specifications and design drawings Perform system commissioning and acceptance testing for new construction and retrofits Inspection, Testing & Maintenance Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on fire alarm and suppression systems including: VESDA semiannual, annual, and 3-year inspections Fire alarm semiannual, annual, and 3-year inspections Sprinkler/suppression system inspections per NFPA 25 Perform battery checks, detector cleaning, and sensitivity testing Test and verify proper operation of fire alarm initiating devices, notification appliances, and supervisory signals Document all inspection, testing, and maintenance activities per NFPA 72 and site requirements Troubleshooting & Repair Diagnose and resolve fire alarm system faults, troubles, and malfunctions Identify and troubleshoot problems with wiring, devices, communication paths, and control panels Respond to system alarms, troubles, and supervisory signals;
investigate and resolve root causes Perform emergency repairs to restore system functionality within required time frames Documentation & Compliance Maintain accurate records of all inspections, tests, maintenance, and repairs Complete work orders and documentation in the enterprise asset management system (Hexagon/EAM) Ensure all work complies with NFPA 72, NFPA 25, NFPA 13, local fire codes, and AHJ requirements Support fire system impairment tracking and reporting processes Participate in fire watch activities when systems are impaired Coordination & Communication Coordinate with Critical Operations Managers (COMs), Lead Building Engineers (LBEs), and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for work planning and scheduling Interface with the Centralized Maintenance Coordination Center (CMCC) for system impairments Support vendor management and oversight when third-party contractors perform FLS work Communicate system status, issues, and recommendations to site leadership
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent (GED) NICET Level I certification in Fire Alarm Systems (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire) Minimum 2 years of experience installing, inspecting, testing, or maintaining fire alarm and/or fire suppression systems Knowledge of NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and technical manuals Valid driver's license Must be able to pass background check for data center access
Preferred Qualifications NICET Level II or higher in Fire Alarm Systems NICET certification in Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems
Experience with VESDA/aspirating smoke detection systems
Experience with Simplex, Notifier, or Edwards fire alarm platforms Knowledge of NFPA 13 (Sprinkler Systems), NFPA 25 (Inspection/Testing/Maintenance), and NFPA 70 (NEC) Experience working in mission-critical environments (data centers, hospitals, manufacturing) Experience in a 24/7/365 critical operations environment State fire alarm license (where applicable) OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification Familiarity with enterprise asset management systems (Hexagon, Maximo, etc.)
Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 lbs Comfortable working at heights (ladders, lifts) and in confined spaces Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods Ability to wear PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, and hearing protection Working Conditions Data center environment with exposure to electrical equipment, mechanical systems, and construction activities May require shift work, on-call availability, or overtime to support 24/7 operations Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor environments in various weather conditions
