Special Education Teacher

Job Details

Position will remain open until filled

Hours: 1.0 FTE

Summary: This position will be working with students in all grade levels. The position will work in partnership with a general education teacher to create a positive learning experience for special education students.

Qualifications
  • Valid current Michigan Teaching Certificate with Special Ed endorsement;
  • Demonstrated organization, planning and classroom management skills;
  • Experience working with special needs children;
  • Specialized academic preparation;
  • Work history exhibiting outstanding work habits including work attendance and positive communications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Regular and reliable in person attendance is an essential job function.
  • Work with students to provide subject area tutoring and assistance.
  • Evaluate and test students.
  • Work with an individual student to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the classroom teacher.
  • Coordinate with the teacher in developing or devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on understanding of individual student needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work.
  • Maintain a required record of student work progress.
  • Contribute to positive student morale.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal and the Director of Special Education.
Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts; ability to compute percentages and to interpret graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Skills and Abilities

Personal computer skills necessary. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

In case of emergency must be able to traverse about school campus and lead students to safety. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs. such as boxes of books and AV/laptop carts. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.

The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
