Our client is a well-established, privately held real estate investment and development organization with a significant portfolio of commercial properties. The company is seeking a Director of Accounting to lead property accounting operations and serve as a key financial partner to senior leadership, investment professionals, and property teams.
This is an opportunity to step into a high-visibility accounting leadership position with exposure to senior leadership, investment teams, and a diverse real estate portfolio. The Director will have meaningful ownership over the accounting function and the opportunity to build processes, develop talent, and drive operational improvements.
Responsibilities- Lead accounting for a diverse portfolio of commercial real estate properties.
- Manage and mentor a large team of accounting professionals, including Managers, Senior Managers, and Property Accountants.
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes under GAAP, tax basis, and cash basis accounting.
- Partner with investment and property management teams on asset performance, reporting, and operating decisions.
- Review budgets, forecasts, operating expenses, and financial reporting.
- Oversee tenant billings, including CAM, real estate taxes, and other property-level billbacks.
- Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and other external reporting requirements.
- Review debt compliance, including loan covenants, debt yield, and debt service coverage requirements.
- Oversee property-level cash management, distributions, capital calls, and lender draws.
- Evaluate and improve accounting processes, controls, and systems.
- Participate in strategic projects and efficiency initiatives across the accounting organization.
- Provide oversight of REIT compliance and related planning.
- 10+ years of accounting experience, preferably within commercial real estate, REITs, or real estate investment/fund accounting.
- Prior experience managing and developing accounting teams.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, audits, and tax reporting.
- Strong understanding of debt compliance and financial analysis.
- Excellent communication and relationship-management skills with the ability to work with senior executives and investment professionals.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
- CPA and prior public accounting experience preferred.
- Experience with MRI, Anaplan, Avid Xchange, or Spreadsheet Server is a plus.
