Goal

The Reading Specialist works with the Principal to plan and deliver professional development and collaborates with all teachers (general education and special education teachers) with the goal of raising school and student achievement in Reading and English Language Arts.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Providing professional development, including trainings, workshops, and embedded professional development via the coaching cycle.
  • Consulting with and facilitating school‑wide and grade‑level data teams to monitor student progress and provide tools and strategies that help teachers adjust classroom practice based on student data, particularly for tiered interventions in Reading.
  • Participating in IEP and RtI meetings, and School Improvement Plans (SIP).
  • Providing student intervention either through classroom modeling or direct instruction/support to small groups (minimum four students).
  • Identifying areas of training for school staff to stay on track toward meeting AIP targets in Reading and English Language Arts.
  • Providing training workshops and consultation in Reading Street, ensuring instruction is aligned to the MA state standards.
  • Analyzing curriculum materials and pacing guides to support teachers in delivering timely and targeted instruction of the MA standards.
  • Providing evidence of student learning that demonstrates progress toward school improvement targets in every classroom and grade, as outlined in the AIP.
  • Planning and modeling differentiated instruction that incorporates quality Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 interventions for both general education and special education students.
  • Following up within classrooms to assist teachers in delivering new interventions based on professional development and student progress data.
  • Demonstrating school progress through periodic checkpoint meetings with the Superintendent, Chief Academic Officer, and the Manager of Curriculum, Data and Assessment.
Job Requirements
  • Possesses a professional license in the area of teaching from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Advanced degrees and Reading Specialist certification.
  • Highly recommended by current principal.
  • Evidence of expertise in Reading curriculum, instruction, and assessment, including data use, exemplary instructional leadership, impact on student learning—especially with high‑needs students—and recent professional development activities.
  • Belief that every student can achieve at high levels.
  • Record of leadership and facilitation of adult learning.
  • Dedication to lifelong learning, reflection, and ongoing professional growth.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with teachers, administrators, and other specialists.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and collaborative teamwork skills.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
