Teaching Assistant – Construction Craft Laborer – Academy

10 Month Position – School year

Position

Purpose:

This position provides support to teachers to ensure a safe and stimulating educational environment for students assigned to the Construction Craft Laborer Carpentry shop. The role is responsible for maintaining and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under its direction and control; performs all other related work as required.

Essential Functions
  • Provides support to teachers to ensure a safe and stimulating environment.
  • Assists the teacher in planning and preparation of daily activities.
  • Aids instructional efforts of the teacher and grades and marks papers.
  • May lead classroom activities.
  • Assists students individually or in groups with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning outcomes.
  • Supervises students.
  • Prepares instructional materials and supplies for use; tutors students as directed.
  • Previews subject matter to students under the guidance of a teacher utilizing a variety of methods.
  • Assists students to set and maintain standards of appropriate behavior.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media to meet the needs of the students.
  • Implements the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy.
  • Is available to meet with students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning educational and behavioral progress.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
Recommended Minimum Qualification

Education, Training and

Experience:

High School graduate; experience in Carpentry required, knowledge and experience with hand and power tool safety.

Knowledge: Demonstrates knowledge and use of materials and resources in accordance with the adopted curriculum and consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided; demonstrates effective classroom management skills and provides for sound and effective techniques of instruction.

Ability: Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion; desire and skill to work with a diverse community in a meaningful and genuine manner; culturally proficient leadership skills including visioning, active listening, coaching, facilitation, and use of data for decision making; ability to adjust presentation of subject content to students’ needs and interests; effectively utilizes classroom space to create an environment conducive to learning;

good communication and relationship building with all school employees, students, teachers, parents, and vendors; prioritizes multiple tasks and handles interruptions under time pressure.

Skills: Demonstrates enthusiasm for learning and interest in students; encourages students to set and maintain high standards of achievement and classroom behavior; demonstrates effective knowledge and use of curriculum content (subject‑matter and skills) associated with the instructional assignment; possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills; is sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population; willing and able to perform duties in a manner that respects community dynamics and serves as a role model and mentor to young students.
