Transit Planning Coordinator Co-op Fall 2026
(2600017X) is a co‑op position with the Transit Planning Team in the MassDOT Rail & Transit Division. The team develops long‑range investment plans, corridor‑specific studies and early design for major capital projects.
About the Transit Planning TeamThe Transit Planning group undertakes a range of planning activities in support of the MBTA and MassDOT’s Rail and Transit Division. This includes long‑range systemwide investment plans, community‑ or corridor‑specific planning studies, and the early planning and conceptual design for major capital investment projects.
At this time the group’s primary focus is on the following projects:
- MBTA Water Transportation Study – a project to study and design a regional network of MBTA ferry services along the Massachusetts coast.
- State Rail Plan – a project to address coordination between passenger and freight rail providers by identifying shared corridors, connections, and opportunities for integrated operations.
The Co‑Op will work under the supervision of a transit‑planning team member and may work on the following projects:
- Update of a visual database of transit services across the Commonwealth.
- Synthesis of regional transit plans from Massachusetts Regional Transit Authorities.
- Preparation, staffing, and documentation for public stakeholder meetings.
- Other related transportation planning topics as assigned.
- Develop geospatial analysis, data visualization, and transportation analysis skills.
- Assist with statewide studies and projects, reviewing deliverables, developing presentations and memos, taking notes and producing meeting summaries, and logging invoices.
- Conduct research assignments to support the team’s work.
- Participate in team strategy sessions, stakeholder meetings, and other duties as necessary.
- Interest in transit, transportation and/or land use planning.
- Experience with ArcGIS, QGIS or other GIS software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented environment with multiple competing priorities.
- Team‑collaboration skills.
- Attention to detail and solution‑oriented attitude.
- Experience in communications and/or graphic design is a plus.
