The Systems and Security Administrator is responsible for the administration, monitoring, and security of the agency’s IT infrastructure. Reporting to the Director of IT Systems & Security, this role provides critical systems-level support and ensures the operational stability and protection of servers, networks, cloud services, and cybersecurity tools. This position works closely with the Senior IT Technician and IT Support Manager to resolve escalated support issues, implement infrastructure improvements, and support new system rollouts.
The Systems and Security Administrator also maintains documentation, monitors network utilization, and ensures best practices are followed in accordance with industry and compliance standards.
- Administer and maintain Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, file shares, and Group Policy Objects (GPOs).
- Monitor and support Microsoft 365 and Azure AD services, ensuring availability, secure access, and policy compliance.
- Provide Tier 3 support for escalated technical issues from the Senior IT Technician and IT Support Manager, especially for issues requiring infrastructure or security-level intervention.
- Collaborate with the IT Support Manager to support advanced troubleshooting, system rollouts, and documentation for new technologies.
- Assist with the configuration, maintenance, and monitoring of firewalls, switches, VPNs, wireless networks, and endpoint protection platforms.
- Maintain current network topology documentation, including physical and logical network maps, and ensure diagrams reflect active configurations.
- Monitor network utilization and performance to identify bottlenecks, suspicious activity, or capacity concerns.
- Administer virtualization environments (VMware, Hyper-V), including provisioning, patching, and resource management.
- Manage security tools such as endpoint protection, MFA, encryption, log management, and vulnerability scanners.
- Respond to and document security incidents; participate in investigations, resolution, and post-incident reviews.
- Monitor system logs and firewall traffic for abnormal behavior or potential threats, escalating to the Director of IT Systems & Security as needed.
- Support disaster recovery planning, system backups, and business continuity practices.
- Maintain infrastructure‑related documentation, including system configurations, installation guides, and administrative procedures.
- Assist with onboarding/offboarding processes by managing user identities, group membership, and access permissions.
- Ensure that patching and firmware updates are applied on a routine basis across infrastructure components.
- Participate in compliance audits and enforce policies that meet HIPAA, NIST, and other applicable security standards.
- Work with external vendors and service providers to support implementations, coordinate upgrades, and resolve support escalations.
- Stay current with industry trends, security threats, and new technologies relevant to systems and infrastructure.
- Participate in the on-call rotation and be available for after-hours support during system outages, maintenance, or emergencies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of IT Systems & Security.
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field—or equivalent technical experience.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience in system administration, network operations, or IT security roles.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365, Azure AD, Windows Server, virtualization (VMware/Hyper-V), and Active Directory services.
- Proficiency in configuring and maintaining firewalls, switches, wireless access points, and endpoint security tools.
