POSITION SUMMARY:
The Medical-Surgical Nurse Manager is responsible for overseeing daily clinical and operational functions of a 30-bed medical-surgical unit to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care. Reporting to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO), this role provides leadership and supervision for nursing and support staff, including staffing, performance management, professional development, and employee and labor relations. The Nurse Manager collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to support quality improvement initiatives, regulatory compliance, and evidence-based practice while promoting a positive and productive work environment.
This position also coordinates unit operations, patient flow, supports patient care delivery as needed, and serves as a key resource for staff and organizational leadership. .

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
- Unit Operations & Leadership – Oversees daily medical-surgical unit operations ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.
- Staff Supervision & Workforce Management – Recruits, hires, evaluates, coaches, and disciplines RN and non-RN staff in accordance with hospital policies and union contracts. Manages staffing assignments and scheduling.
- Employee Relations & Labor Compliance – Maintains knowledge of labor agreements, personnel policies, and regulatory requirements; partners with Human Resources and Labor Relations teams to address employee issues appropriately.
- Performance Management & Professional Development – Promotes staff competency, clinical excellence, and professional growth through partnership with nursing education, mentoring, preceptor programs, and ongoing performance development.
- Quality Improvement & Regulatory Compliance – Participates in and leads quality improvement, risk management, and patient safety initiatives to ensure compliance with standards of care and regulatory agencies (e.g., Joint Commission, OSHA, DPH).
- Problem Solving & Communication – Identifies operational, staffing, and patient care concerns proactively and collaborates with leadership and interdisciplinary teams to implement timely solutions.
- Clinical Coordination & Patient Care Support – Coordinates clinical activities and patient flow in collaboration with the charge nurse to meet patient care needs safely and effectively
- Research & Evidence-Based Practice – Supports unit-based research initiatives and promotes evidence-based nursing practices to improve patient outcomes and clinical performance.
- Committee & Organizational Participation – Participates in departmental and organizational committees, ensuring effective communication of initiatives, updates, and outcomes to staff and leadership.
- Professional Accountability & Leadership Development – Maintains current clinical and leadership knowledge through ongoing education, conferences, and management-focused professional development.
REQUIRED
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in nursing and at least 5 years of relevant clinical experience
- Progressive leadership experience required, such as serving as Charge Nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, or in another unit-based leadership role
- Strong skills in patient flow coordination, interdisciplinary collaboration and clinical operations required
- Experience in Performance Improvement, total Quality Management, and/or Continuous Quality Improvement
PREFERRED
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master’s Degree
- Previous nurse supervision or management experience
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
REQUIRED:
- Current license to practice Nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- ACLS & BLS certification required
KNOWLEDGE AND
SKILLS:
- Ability to effectively manage expense budget as allocated.
