Position:Public Safety Officer I
Hours: 24 hrs
Shift: Evening shift with weekend and holiday rotation; 2:45 pm – 11:15 pm
Location: St. Luke’s Hospital – New Bedford, MA

Under the general supervision of the Public Safety Operations Manager, Shift Supervisor or designee, this position performs all duties related to day‑to‑day protection and security of Southcoast Health System assets and information, as well as the safety of all persons on hospital/SHS property. The incumbent officer proactively guards against fire, theft, vandalism and unauthorized entry to SHG grounds and/or buildings while controlling access points.
Qualifications- High school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred.
- Prior military, security, corrections, police or relevant experience a plus.
- May require obtaining special police/constable powers within a designated municipality.
- Experience:
over three months up to and including one year required. - A valid driver’s license required.
- Must have, or be able to obtain within 6 months to one year, a Massachusetts Firearms Identification Card and license to carry firearms (Pistol Permit).
- Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) de‑escalation training; OC Pepper (OCAT), handcuffing (PATH), baton (PPBT) education/training within 120 days of hire.
- BLS, CPR and First Responder certification required within 120 days of hire.
- Eligible to obtain appointment as a special police officer in Commonwealth of Massachusetts or New Bedford Special Police Officer under respective requirements.
- Must obtain International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) Basic Officer Certification within one year.
- Must be fully vaccinated against seasonal influenza and COVID‑19, or be exempt for medical or personal reasons by signing a statement.
- Compensation: pay rate determined based on level of experience.
USD $22.22 – $30.30 per hour.
