Systems Engineer (Robotics)- Build the systems behind the robots $120,000–$175,000 + Equity

Most engineering roles ask you to solve tickets.

This one asks you to solve systems.

We're partnering with a well-funded robotics company that's entering one of the most exciting stages of its journey; transitioning from startup to scale-up after significant investment and commercial traction.

This is a rare opportunity to join at the point where the foundations being built today will define how the company scales for years to come.

The role has been created by the CTO, who currently owns many of these challenges himself. He's looking for an engineer who thinks the same way he does; someone who naturally asks why something behaves the way it does before deciding how to fix it.

If you're the type of engineer who can't walk past an inefficient system without wanting to redesign it, you'll probably feel at home here.

This isn't traditional Infrastructure.

It isn't traditional Dev Ops.

This isn't traditional Robotics.

You'll move across software, robotics, Linux, infrastructure, developer tooling, automation and AI, solving whatever prevents world‑class engineers from moving faster.

Some days you'll be improving robotics infrastructure.

Some days you'll be deep inside Linux tracking down an issue nobody else can explain.

And sometimes you'll realise the real problem isn't technical at all, it's how the entire engineering system has been designed.

That's the level this role operates at.

The engineer we're looking for...

You're naturally curious.

You enjoy understanding how things work beneath the surface.

You don't just fix symptoms, you look for root causes.

You think in systems, feedback loops and first principles rather than isolated tasks.

You see patterns that other people miss.

You build solutions because something should work better, not because someone assigned you a ticket.

You're the kind of engineer who asks:

"Why does the system behave like this?"

before asking,

"How do we fix it?"

You'll probably enjoy this role if...
  • You've ever redesigned an internal system because the existing approach didn't make sense.
  • You've built tools that made everyone around you more effective.
  • You're equally comfortable discussing software architecture, operating systems and robotics.
  • You enjoy learning unfamiliar technologies when the problem demands it.
  • You prefer ownership over process.
  • You like shipping improvements rather than debating them endlessly.
What you'll work on

You'll own and evolve the engineering systems that keep robots operating reliably in production.

That could include:

  • Building internal engineering platforms and tooling.
  • Improving robotics infrastructure and deployment workflows.
  • Developing systems-level Python software.
  • Working across Linux, networking and distributed systems.
  • Building CI/CD pipelines and reproducible developer environments.
  • Using AI coding agents to automate debugging, testing and engineering workflows.
  • Identifying bottlenecks across the engineering organisation and building scalable solutions.

This is a role with enormous breadth and genuine ownership.

You'll become a force multiplier for every engineer in the company.

What matters most

We're far more interested in how you think than a checklist of technologies.

Successful engineers in this team typically have:

  • Build production software with Python.
  • Strong Linux and systems knowledge.
  • Experience working with robotics, automation or hardware.
  • Experience owning engineering infrastructure or developer tooling.
  • A track record of building things outside of your day job, open source, Git Hub projects or personal engineering projects.

Many have backgrounds in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Robotics or Aerospace, not because the degree matters, but because these disciplines often develop engineers who reason from first principles and enjoy solving complex systems problems.

This role probably isn't for you if...
  • You prefer highly defined responsibilities.
  • You enjoy specialising in a single technology.
  • You'd rather optimise one component than understand the whole system.
  • You need detailed direction before getting started.
  • You enjoy large, process-heavy environments where every change requires multiple approvals.
