Job Description

Traveling Heavy Civil/Mission Critical Project Engineer/QC or Field Engineer – responsible for managing field logistics, updating project managers and contractors, and ensuring compliance with engineering standards, codes, and specifications.

Responsibilities
  • Work with Project Managers and Superintendents to provide direction and support in managing operations, overseeing job logistics, and generating reports for division leaders.
  • Manage plan grid and heavy job for project work accuracy, monitor project costs to stay within budget.
  • Prepare, review, and approve supplier purchase orders.
  • Understand owner contract and subcontract documents to determine inclusions/exclusions for invoice payment.
  • Validate, reconcile, and maintain accurate quantities for billing purposes; communicate differences to project management.
  • Identify out-of-scope work for change orders.
  • Produce drafts, manage and maintain project submittal/RFI/logs for lead project manager.
  • Schedule, facilitate, and manage Gopher 1 tickets.
  • Schedule and lead private utility meetings, documenting conversations to communicate with office personnel.
  • Prepare change orders, manage trucking logs, and approve invoices.
  • Perform on-site safety observations.
  • Identify, complete, and apply for local permits.
  • Attend meetings as required with clients, owners, and project teams.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with client, subcontractor, vendors, land-owners, suppliers, etc.
  • Develop and oversee job-site–specific requirements relating to safety, site cleanliness, and delivery schedules.
  • Organize and ensure proper documentation and drawing distribution to staff and field personnel.
  • Assist in production and processing of project deliverables such as Safety and QA/QC plans, and test procedures.
  • Assist in drafting subcontractor/P.O. agreements and ensure all subcontract agreements are finalized before work begins.
  • Plan and coordinate engineering deliverables from various parties.
  • Track productions to produce project activity profiles.
  • Proactively work with Project Management, Field Supervisory, and Client teams to identify and analyze potential risks and impacts to the project schedule.
  • Assist with job-site duties to keep facilities functioning correctly.
  • Assist with estimating duties including take-offs, solicitations to subcontractors/suppliers/bid, and quote preparation/bid running.
  • Participate in business development events.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Ability to work with field concepts and work in the office.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Effective communication (oral, written, presentation, listening) with internal and external customers.
  • Effective motivational and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations, including mean, median, and averages.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all Veit policies and procedures.
  • Ability to respond to shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment with a can-do attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or related field.
  • 1‑3 years of estimating and project management experience in a related scope of work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience using construction software.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret project plans and specifications.
  • Must have a clean motor vehicle record.
Travel & Working Hours

Requires 8 to 10-hour workdays, Monday – Friday. Travel requirement is 80% to mission-critical job sites.

Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to stand and/or sit in a stationary position for extended periods (>50%).
  • Regularly required to use a computer/laptop/iPad in an office environment with natural and/or fluorescent lighting.
  • Navigate between office building floors, attend off-site meetings, and lift up to 50 lbs unassisted.
  • Occasionally may encounter high noise levels; hearing protection is provided/required.
