Position: High Burner/Torch Laborer

Position Summary

Perform tasks involving physical labor at construction project sites, including operating hand and power tools such as torching equipment, rigging equipment, air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments. Responsibilities may also include cleaning and preparing sites, digging trenches, setting braces to support excavation sides, erecting scaffolding, and cleaning up rubble, debris, and other waste materials.

May assist other craft workers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of strenuous manual labor tasks at construction sites.
  • Ensure proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
  • Bring concerns to the attention of project Foreman, Superintendent, General Superintendent, Safety Director, or Management.
  • Load and unload trucks and haul and hoist materials.
  • Maintain a clean job site at all times.
  • Pick up and secure all material, tools, and small equipment each day to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Assist in identifying and ensuring underground and overhead utilities have been located/exposed prior to excavation.
  • Review trenching requirements with the Superintendent and ensure any required protection is available.
  • Keep project leadership informed of actions that may affect job performance or company operations.
  • Work at elevated heights via lifts, platforms, scaffolding, etc.; must be comfortable with heights.
  • Perform other projects or duties as assigned by management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Minimum 6 months of demolition experience.
  • Aerial boom lift training and ability to provide documentation or references.
  • Minimum 1 year of heavy industrial torch experience.
  • Crane signaling and rigging certifications required.
  • Ability to work with equipment, materials, and supplies found in construction work.
  • Follow proper use and safety guidelines at all times.
  • OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, and demonstrated knowledge of applicable safety precautions and procedures.
  • Ability to view and understand Veit’s safety training video.
  • Willingness and ability to perform manual work.
  • Good oral and written communication skills with all levels of management, employees, external vendors, and business associates.
  • Understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency as required by management or project schedules.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • 3 years of heavy industrial torch experience.
  • 3 years of aerial lift experience.
Additional Requirements
  • Willing to be fit‑tested for PPE (test paid for by Veit).
  • Maintain readiness to wear a mask; must be close or clean shaven.
  • Adhere to project‑specific blood testing requirements.
  • Union affiliation or willingness to join the union.
  • Pass pre‑employment drug test.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Position requires 10–12‑hour workdays and occasional weekends as needed; flexible work hours required.
  • Willing to travel as needed.
Physical Demands

Regular requirement to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. Tasks include sitting, standing, walking, bending knees, stretching arms, talking, hearing, stooping, or kneeling as necessary. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Work Environment

Work conducted in environmental conditions near machinery, loud construction noise, variable heights, and varied weather (rain, snow, wind, cold, heat). Employees may be exposed to dust, vibrations, and hazardous materials.
