Performs various clerical, secretarial, and administrative duties in the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.

Performs various administrative tasks in areas such as personnel, purchase entries, public communication, concealed permit applications and background checks, and records keeping. The employee performs services that require considerable tact and discretion in handling sensitive or confidential matters. Work requires independence and self-initiative in all administrative responsibilities. Sound judgment is required in performing tasks. Work is performed under the supervision of an office manager or higher-level supervisor and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and the quality and effectiveness of work completed.

Answers the telephone; takes messages; directs calls or visitors and gives information based on the type of request; may dispatch personnel for services.

Appropriately handles confidential or sensitive information.

Aids in handling accounting and budgetary functions for the office.

Assists the public with questions and completes Concealed Weapon Application appointments.

Processes background checks for Concealed Weapon Applicants.

Assists in the Sex Offender registry program and processes civil papers.

Assists in conducting background checks for the hiring program, which includes both the Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center.

Handles all incoming citizens at the Sheriff’s Office lobby window and processes incoming mail.

Reviews and verifies documents for correct information; processes documents based on review and verification; files and retrieves materials, and performs periodic follow-up activities.

Maintains records and files; initiates appropriate follow-up or further action based on the status of the record.

Can multi-task in all administrative areas within the office.

Assists Law Enforcement with Aegis and DCI entries and inquiries.

Collects and maintains pawn shop checks.

Collects, enters, and deposits cash, checks, and all other forms of office revenue daily.

Assists with the preparation of office events and functions.

Processes acceptance, denial and/or revocation of concealed permits.

Operates a variety of office equipment such as copy/fax machines and computers.

Familiar with Office and County policies and procedures.

Familiar with Office practices and regulations.

General knowledge of laws and policies related to law enforcement and gun permit laws.

Working knowledge of arithmetic and its uses in general office work.

Ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, and spelling.

Working knowledge of arithmetic and its uses in general office work.

Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.

Ability to gather and give basic information and instructions on office programs based on inquiries.

Ability to learn thorough knowledge of others and organizational programs.

Ability to be tactful and courteous.

Ability to gather and compile materials from a variety of sources.

Ability to use computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet, and file maintenance programs.

Ability to use judgment in organizing and establishing priorities and work assigned.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessary by work assignments.

Ability to compile information based on general instructions.

Ability to arrange and place records, reports, and files into a proper sequence.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the general public.

May be required to serve during times of disaster.

Performs related duties as required.
