Position: Band Director
Reports to: Principal
Terms of Employment: Ten‑month work year, unless otherwise specified
Pay Grade: NC State Salary Schedule, Commensurate with experience, + Supplement
FLSA Status: Exempt
Nature of WorkThe Band Director is responsible for all areas of the band program, including but not limited to managing administrative tasks and planning the instrumental music curriculum; organizing and leading practice and performances, including after‑school, concert, marching band, and jazz rehearsals; organizing the parent organization and guiding its executive board; and coordinating performances and rehearsals with school leadership and the athletic director.
EssentialFunctions / Typical Tasks
- Teach the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, Common Core, and Essential Standards for assigned grade.
- Plan, organize, and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that contribute to their educational and social development.
- Obtain and maintain membership with NCBA and NCMEA and stay current with their policies and procedures.
- Conduct lessons or instructional activities at a brisk pace appropriate for students.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior required to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment.
- Instruct students in proper care and use of materials and equipment, store items, and control use to prevent loss or abuse.
- Prepare progress reports.
- Speak fluently and precisely, presenting lessons and instructional activities using concepts and language understandable to students.
- Communicate with parents and school counselors about student progress.
- Cooperate in school‑wide supervision of students during out‑of‑classroom activities, participate in faculty and/or district committees and sponsorship of student activities, and perform other duties as assigned.

- Understanding of the growth and development of students to whom the teacher is assigned.
- Knowledge of students’ growth, development, and learning.

- Adaptability to performing under stress and in emergency situations.
- Ability to exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent public contact.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Certification and Licensure RequirementsMust hold or be qualified to hold a North Carolina Professional Educator’s License.
Physical RequirementsAbility to sit or stand for extended periods, be sufficiently mobile, speak clearly, and hear and understand speech at normal levels.
