Position: Telemetry and Control Technician (00524)

General Definition of Work

Performs difficult technical work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of electrical and electronic equipment in the water and wastewater treatment plants and related facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Repairing and maintaining electrical and electronic equipment and controls; installing and checking new equipment.

  • Repairs and maintains electrical and electronic equipment and controls; installs and checks new equipment to include, but not limited to vehicle lights, vehicle electrical systems and facilities electrical systems.
  • Installs, repairs, maintains, modifies and replaces step system control panels electrical wiring and conduit in all weather conditions.
  • Trains all water and sewer personal to be able to troubleshoot minor electrical problems during periods of call or times of short personal to assist in the electrical troubleshooting.
  • Performs electrical repairs on lift stations to include but not limited to wiring, replacing relays, circuit protection devices, contractors, starters and soft starters.
  • Builds new or modifies existing lift station control panels; programs programmable logic controls used in lift stations.
  • Ensures lift stations are capable of being powered by generators during periods of power loss.
  • Trains others to perform minor repair as may be required during period of Technicians unavailability.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and modifies lift station communications equipment use for SCADA system; installs, maintains and downloads data sensing devices.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and modifies as required all motors, pumps, motor controls and associated electrical equipment at well sites, water plant and wastewater plant.
  • Maintains repairs, modifies and installs new telemetry and controls equipment used in the SCADA monitoring system at the plant and at the control office.
  • Updates SCADA computers software and hardware as required by the system provider to ensure efficient operation.
  • Installs generator receptacles and transfer switches.
  • Checks work of contractors to ensure compliance with contract specifications.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, tools and terminology of the electrical trade; thorough knowledge of electrical theory; thorough knowledge of National Electrical Code and State and local electrical codes and ordinances; thorough knowledge of the safety hazards of the work and of the necessary safety precautions; ability to troubleshoot energized electrical equipment; ability to make repairs to complex electrical wiring, fixtures and equipment;

ability to perform manual work over extended periods of time; skill in the use of electrical maintenance and repair equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Requirements

Education and experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and extensive experience in electronic systems maintenance.

Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to obtain within the first six months of employment an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
