Position: Electronics Technician I

The Department of Transportation, Division State Highway Administrator – Division of Highways is hiring an Electronics Technician I (S) (Position No. , Grade NC09). The primary base of operations for this position is in New Bern, although work will be required statewide.

Responsibilities
  • Serve on a 2‑member team as an Electronics Technician for movable or fixed span bridges in Division 2.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and repairing electrical and electronic issues for movable span bridges including motors, motor drive systems, electronic controls and safety interlocks.
  • Repair and maintain electrical utility distribution for HVAC, lighting and other electrical equipment installed.
  • Act as an emergency responder for drawbridge failures as controls are predominantly electrical or electronic in nature.
  • Assist with conducting electrical inspection of drawbridges and their components, and document any deficiencies found.
  • Read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, ladder logic control diagrams and equipment manuals.
  • Perform work in an assigned area and statewide, and participate in an on‑call rotation.
Qualifications
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a North Carolina Electrical Contractor’s License and movable bridge experience.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code, MUTCD, AASHTO and Federal Regulations pertaining to movable bridges and fixed bridge navigational lighting.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and electronic traffic control systems.
  • Experience reading and understanding electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals and PLC ladder logic.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and computers for monitoring and downloading electrical data.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in confined spaces, climb bridge structures, work from both aerial and under‑bridge equipment, and navigate and work from a boat.
  • Associate’s degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Salary

Grade NC09: $41,206.00 – $72,113.00 annually.
