Position Overview

Maintenance/Construction Technician I (S)

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform carpentry maintenance and preservation for 41 buildings, including more than 14 large historic buildings and the 60,000 square foot modern North Carolina History Center and 26 supporting buildings.
  • Assist in painting and other building trade tasks such as minor masonry, walkway and metal work, and repairs to door lock systems.
  • Collaborate with Facilities staff in setting up, taking down, and storing scaffolding, ladders, constructing wooden platforms and staging.
  • Ensure all hand tools, power tools, and stationary machines are cleaned and serviced routinely for safety.
  • Purchase necessary supplies for preventive maintenance and repair work following department purchasing requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Museum or historic structure experience in maintenance preservation.
  • Experience using tools and materials for preservation, reproduction, and fabrication of wooden decorative and architectural elements.
  • Experience reading and working from sketches, scaled drawings, and blueprints.
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or GED diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in mechanical or building trades. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience may qualify.

Special qualification may require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician under Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart

Physical Requirements
  • Work Monday–Friday 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with one hour lunch. Rotating on‑call weekend duty and occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Lift heavy materials (50–100 lbs.) and perform repetitive manual tasks.
  • Operate power equipment daily.
  • Work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • Work indoors and outdoors.
  • Hold a valid U.S. driver’s license or obtain one within 90 days of employment.
Benefits

Recruitment range: $31,200 – $43,346 per year.

Sign‑on bonus of $1,000 available to eligible candidates. Eligibility criteria apply.
