General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate semiskilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of specialized tools and equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision.
Essential Functions/Typical TasksRepairing and constructing buildings, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, streets, drainageways and facilities.
- Performs carpentry, painting, masonry and concrete work.
- Operates bucket truck, pick-up, flat-bed truck, dump truck and other automotive equipment necessary in performance of tasks.
- Determines supplies, parts and equipment required for assignment; orders replacement parts.
- Erects scaffolds and ladders; paints interior and exterior of buildings and facilities.
- Installs, repairs and replaces parking meters; collects money from meters; files reports.
- Repairs sidewalks, driveways, catch basins, curbs, gutters and busted water drains.
- Cleans catch basins; checks drainage tiles; clears drainage ditches; cleans up storm debris.
- Assists with other department activities when assigned.
- Assists with snow removal and ice control.
- May be required to work outside normal working hours in an emergency or stand-by status.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned; thorough knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work; thorough knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work; ability to lift 50 pound weights, climb ladders and shovel soil and stone;
ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience as a semiskilled worker in maintenance, repair and/or construction activities.
Physical Requirements This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities;
the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. CDL may be required or ability to obtain within first 6 months of employment.
